DescriptionResponsible for creating, managing and promoting museum education programming; cultivating relationships with community groups, educators and the general public via off-site, outreach activities and overseeing interns and volunteers.  Designs interactive, hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities for children; exhibition and southwest New Mexico history-related, content-rich programs that connect to classroom studies and state education requirements.  Conducts tours, schedules lecture series, and develops other adult-targeted programs at the Museum.  Acts as liaison between the Museum and community; assists in helping the Museum reach new audiences especially underserved populations and demographics underrepresented in Museum attendance.  Manages the budgets for education and programs; writes contracts; prepares promotional materials and advertising; does program evaluations; participates in grant writing; and collaborates with curatorial, collections and exhibitions staff.  Assists the team serve the mission in areas outside the job descriptiion.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

RequirementsEDUCATION-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, History, Education, Public History, American Studies, or closely related fields;and/or 2 years of expeirence working in an education department in a museum.  Preferred Master’s Degree in Museumstudies with emphasis on Museum Education.

EXPERIENCE-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

2 years of experience working in an education department in a museum; and/or a Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, History, Education, Public History, American Studies, or closely related fields. A combination of classroom teaching and public outreach experience may be considered a substitute for a museum education background.  Must be creative and engaging  self starter who employs innovative strategies to engage visitors.

ABILITIES-MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.  Knowledge of best practices and latest developments in museum education, visitor experience, museum interpretation, and public history.  Knowledge of and willingness to keep up with the latest requirements in K-12 curriculum, such as Common Core.  Ability to work with varied demographics.  Ability to speak before groups.  Prefer, knowledge of American history, especially southern New Mexico history, and a strong commitment to on-going research to develop exhibition-related programs.  Prefer experience working with Hispanic communities and Spanish language abilities a plus.  Abiltiy to pass drug and alcohol tests.
