The Museum of Glass is seeking a full-time Director of Communications in Tacoma, Washington.

Thirteen years ago, the Museum of Glass opened its doors as an architectural icon and a one-of-a-kind museum dedicated to glass art. Located on the Thea Foss waterway in thriving downtown Tacoma, the 75,000 square foot facility combines exhibition galleries, an education studio, a theater, the 500-foot long pedestrian Chihuly Bridge of Glass and the  West Coast’s largest and most active museum glass making studio – the Hot Shop.

Based in the Pacific Northwest, the center of the American Studio Glass movement, the Museum serves regional, national and international audiences. The Museum’s visitor-centered public programs, original exhibitions and riveting glassmaking demonstrations have inspired and engaged over two million visitors from all 50 states and more than 75 countries. The Museum of Glass is a member of the American Association of Museum Directors and was granted accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, recognizing its commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement.

The Role

The Director of Communications will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing integrated marketing and public relations plans for all exhibitions, educational programs, events, community and development initiatives, and other outreach efforts to maintain and increase the Museum’s visibility and attendance. Duties also include developing strategies to deepen the Museum’s audience through a variety of traditional, social, and guerilla marketing, managing the Marketing Department, coordinating with other departments within the museum, community relations, and budget management.

Major duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement marketing plans and projects for new and existing exhibitions, programs, events, and community and development initiatives.
  • Lead strategic applications and positioning of museum brand both locally and nationally.
  • Utilize a variety of marketing tools including traditional media, social media and guerilla marketing.
  • Oversee the production of and approve all marketing and communications materials.
  • Collaborate on promotional strategies with neighboring museums.
  • Create, implement and oversee strategies and timelines for marketing, communications, advertising, media buying, and public relations.
  • Develop relationships with vendors, sponsors, advertisers and community contacts in order to maximize marketing dollars.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Museum’s senior management team.
  • Coordinate with other museum departments to ensure marketing and communications needs are being met.
  • Manage and work with Marketing and Communications staff to meet goals and execute strategies.
  • Develop, manage and oversee marketing and communications budget and staff.
  • Measure, review and report on the progress of marketing and communications plans and projects.
  • Provide monthly marketing and communications reports.
  • Oversee the compilation, analysis and evaluation of market data.
Requirements

Education and Experience

Education Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree preferred.
Experience Five or more years experience in marketing and communications.
Certifications n/a
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal under time constraints.
  • Ability to develop and implement an integrated marketing and communications plan.
  • Excellent project management and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; individual must be personable and diplomatic in working with diverse constituency and staff.
  • Proven experience using best practices in marketing communications (including related technology), public relations, graphic design, internet marketing, and print industry.
  • Budget development and monitoring experience.
  • Proven management/supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of regional and national marketing trends for arts organizations/museums as well as internet/website management.
  • Self-sufficient in routine office administration tasks, including finalizing correspondence, maintaining calendar appointments, preparing presentations, etc.
  • Able to effectively represent the Museum at public events.
  • Must be suited for a fast-paced, high-energy work environment and have strong organizational skills, including a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in working office applications: MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Team player with a sense of humor.
