Essential Job Functions

The VP of Development provides leadership for, strategizes and directs fund-raising activities and programs for ZNE including individual gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation grants and capital campaigns. In addition is responsible for developing and implementing fully-integrated annual and long-term fundraising and sponsorship plans that in addition to increasing philanthropic and sponsorship support, supports increasesinattendance and earned revenues. The Vice President of Development also serves as a member of ZNE’s senior management team, which oversees all aspects of ZNE’s operations.

As an Executive Team member, the Vice President of Development assists in the establishment and execution of annual institutional goals, business and master plans, supports departmental objectives, institutional policies and procedures, customer service development and training, budget development and management.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads and manages the Development staff to ensure the effective and efficient operation the Department.
  • Manages the Development Department in a fully integrated manner to ensure fundraising goals are met and capable prospects and members are cultivated into long-term donors.
  • Consistently demonstrates dedication, professionalism and team-spirit.
  • Creates a positive work environment where dedication, respect and integrity are core to the culture.
  • Actively mentors staff to promote professional growth and encouragesprofessional development. Coaches stafffor improvement of weaknesses as needed.
  • Actively solicits input of staff in developing creative, aggressive, yet realistic, fundraising plans, including implementation calendars.
  • In conjunction with the President and Board, establish short and long-term fundraising goals.
  • Ensures preparation and delivery of complete and accurate reports of Development activities.
  • Develops and executes Development events that are cost effective, revenue generating and build new supporters.
  • Creates fundraising plans that support the strategic goals and plans of Zoo New England.
  • Designs and creates highly effective presentations, solicitations and supporting materials.
  • Designs and executes plans and programs for new donor acquisitions for ZNE each year.
  • Builds loyalty and commitment in existing donors through appropriate stewardship, communications and recognition programs to minimize donor losses.
  • Cultivates ever greater involvement in development by Board Members, Advisory Council and non-Development staff to build a team-based culture of support.
  • Cultivates a fully engaged Development Committee composed of Board Members, Advisory Council Members and others as may be assigned to this committee of the Board.
  • Supports a culture of relationship-based giving over transactional support.
  • Exercises a combination of creativity and consistency to build ever more support for ZNE, its mission and goals.
  • Develop and manage a strategy for communicating with members and donors that ensures they receive consistent messages and appropriately timed solicitations.
  • Maintains, cultivates and solicits an appropriately-sized portfolio of donors and prospects – minimum of 50.
  • Serve as a representative of the ZNE through public speaking engagements, media interviews, events and other networking opportunities.
  • Is a visible and active member of the community with civic involvement outside the Zoos.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments and divisions of ZNE to maximize the success of ZNE in reaching its mission and goals.
  • Work in conjunction with ZNE’s Marketing & Communications staff and consultants to develop and successfully execute initiatives and branding to grow ZNE support.
  • Works collaboratively with Membership Department & Communications Dept. to coordinate mailings and digital communications schedules and brand consistency.
  • Work in conjunction with ZNE’s Board of Directors, senior management staff and department staff to develop and successfully execute ZNE’s full spectrum of fundraising plans.
  • Work with the Board, staff, consultants and others to successfully grow sponsorship support of ZNE.
  • Develop annual expense budgets and revenue projections for the department (subject to the approval of President & CEO and the Board of Directors).
  • Ensures that the department operates within its budget and meets or exceeds revenue projections.
  • Represents Zoo New England professionally and ethically at all times.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Minimum Job Requirements

  • 6 years of experience in developmentwith increasing responsibility for fundraising.
  • A proven track-record of building comprehensive, successful fundraising programs.
  • A demonstrated ability to build and lead successful teams by recruiting, managing and developing an effective staff.
  • Proven ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong written verbal and communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge.
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s in management-related field of study preferred.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of Zoo New England.
