The Mellon Collections Specialist is a three-year grant funded position at the Tang Teaching Museum.  The Collections Specialist will be a key component and manager of “Diversity, Access, and Museum Collections” – a project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  This position organizes and realizes efforts to make the collection more accessible to wide variety of audiences.  They will help establish complete records of collection artworks through digitization, conducting research, and creating electronic records on a museum collection database.  The Collections Specialist will complete the cataloguing of over 500 collection artworks annually.  This position importantly serves as a key staff member supporting the academic use of the collection in teaching, providing faculty and students access to the Tang collection and facilitating outreach activities with contemporary artists represented in the collection. A special focus of the Mellon project is recent artwork by artists of diverse backgrounds (specifically African American artists) and artists whose works address race and identity.

Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’ s degree in Art History or Arts Administration / Museum Studies or similar. 2-5 years Museum experience. Must have practical knowledge of object/art handling and storage techniques.  Knowledge of art history and knowledge and appreciation for contemporary art.  Must have strong verbal and editing skills, and be detail-oriented and highly organized.

Working knowledge of museum digitization processes and storage/retrieval of data key.  Familiarity with EmbArk (or similar museum collections database), Aperture, Excel, scanning applications and digital photography a plus.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to speak in front of groups and work with students, faculty, museum colleagues, and community members.  Ability to assist faculty in collection-based assignments and the development of curricula related to the Tang collection.  Enthusiasm for collaboration and team-based work.
