GENERAL INFORMATION:

The Siouxland Heritage Museums invite applications for a Museum Preparator to perform a variety of functions related to the design, security, construction, and installation of exhibit components.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES INCLUDE:

Plan and direct the fabrication, installation, security, and disassembly of both temporary and permanent museum exhibitions. Plan project and work schedules for exhibit fabrication. Prepare construction drawings and documents from designer’s sketches, photographs, and verbal instructions. Design, construct, and install items for exhibits including walls, graphic panels, vignettes, cases, frames, mounts, interactives, and barriers. Assist with structural, technical, and security aspects of exhibits. Design and construct office furniture, fixtures, and props. Design and install low voltage exhibit security systems. Formulate material needs, cost estimates, and material availability. Pick up and transport building materials, supplies, and finished products. Maintain inventory records of fabrication materials. Prepare purchase order requests for materials, supplies, tools, machinery, and subcontractors. Maintain and manage shop and its associated tools, machinery, and storage areas. Train and supervise staff and volunteers in construction techniques and shop safety. Assist and supervise workers in the installation, repair, and upkeep of exhibition structures and objects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of a program in art or industrial art from a vocational/technical school and a minimum of five years of work experience in design, fabrication and installation of museum exhibits or bachelor’s degree in related field and two years of relevant work experience. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered. Must successfully complete pre-employment background process. Knowledge of carpentry; types, grades and uses of lumber; fastening devices; and paints and finishes. Knowledge of basic electricity and lighting systems. Knowledge of security systems. Knowledge of plastic and laminate fabrication. Knowledge of hazards related to power tools and carpentry materials and the ability to take appropriate precautions. Ability to supervise and lay out the construction of museum exhibits. Ability to operate and maintain all hand tools as well as routers, sanders, table saws, radial arm saws, skill saws, jointers, band saws and other woodworking equipment and tools. Ability to read and draw blueprints. Ability to maintain fabrication records and perform calculation for cost estimating. Ability to work with subcontractors and vendors. Ability to reproduce artifacts (casting and facsimile reproduction). Ability toward self motivation. Ability to understand and carry out instructions without close supervision. Ability to communicate effective orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agencies, and the public. Ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in historical research and writing. Experience in furniture design and carpentry. Experience in audio visual development and production. Knowledge and experience in proper artifact handling and artifact mount making techniques. Experience in construction budget estimation and development. Knowledge of micro-electronics as they apply to museum exhibits. Knowledge of museum quality framing. Knowledge of photographic skills and audio visual techniques.
