The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City is one of the premier science, research and cultural institutions in the country. The Assistant Director will have three major responsibilities: 1) strategic planning; 2) administrative direction and 3) human capital development. The person will report to the Director of Youth Learning and Research and will collaborate to advance the agenda set forth by AMNH. Strategic planning activities (25%) will include designing and leading the implementation of programs that both broaden our audience in key areas of work and deepen experiences for others, and support experimentation in youth programming as related to the museum’s expansion project. Administration direction (25%) will include all activities that support staff to carry out the ongoing programs/ operations of the department with special attention to creating systems/mechanisms to make operations efficient, annual budget development and monitoring, and marketing and recruitment. Human capital development (50%) will include supervision and support for coordinators/managers and senior managers, overseeing activities where staff are hired, trained and supported for growth and refining of practices, creating structures that position staff in appropriate roles that match skill sets and dispositions, and working with senior leadership to create appropriate plans/procedures/protocols for protecting of minors.

The position will require a work schedule that may run from 11-7pm on select weekdays and working occasional Saturdays and Sundays for events and programs.
