Position: Curatorial Assistant

Status: Full-Time / Non-Exempt, Fixed Term

Job Duration: Scheduled to last through September 30, 2017. Potential to be extended if required. This position qualifies for participation in the LSFM benefits package. This position does not provide relocation assistance.

Salary: $16-18 per hour

Reports To: Curator

Overview:
The Curatorial Assistant is responsible for assisting the Curator with the research, writing and development of exhibits to be installed in the new Lone Star Flight Museum at Ellington Airport. This full time position will report to the Curator and will work closely with the CEO, COO, Collections Volunteers and project Consultants and Contractors.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Research, planning and execution of exhibits, including:

  • Assist with development and realization of exhibits, providing project management support by managing deadlines, milestones, checklists, correspondence and deliverables;
  • Conduct research and provide curatorial support for the Curator;
  • Write and edit content for exhibit descriptions and curatorial texts including signage, training documents, communications and marketing material;
  • Process and handle museum artifacts including cataloging, numbering, photographing, data entry and archival packing of artifacts in permanent storage locations;
  • Assist with packing and unpacking of artifacts during relocation to new facility;
  • Work with external consultants and contractors and internal colleagues in order to streamline communications and manage deliverables;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across all departments to execute all aspects of exhibit production and implementation;
  • Provide general administrative support for the department.

Preferred experience and background skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Museum Science, Museum Studies or History preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Aviation History;
  • Prior museum experience in collections and/or exhibits preferred;
  • Must have strong project management and research skills to advance independent research including familiarity with library and image databases;
  • Must be detail oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to maintain precise and careful records;
  • Must be able to lift, handle, pack, unpack and move artifacts and manipulate stairs;
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate well with others;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently while being creative and resourceful;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and collections management software/databases.
