The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art will offer a graduate Fellowship during the academic year August 2018 through June 2019. The Fellowship is designed for recent college or university graduates or those completing graduate programs in art history, museum studies, or related fields who seek to gain experience in a museum education setting. This is a full-time paid Fellowship and requires availability on evenings and weekends.

The Fellow will work closely with all Education staff to develop and administer programming for adult and academic audiences. The Fellow will conceive, implement, and evaluate a rigorous and broad range of programs designed to provide visitors with meaningful arts experiences surrounding the museum’s collections and special exhibitions. Programs may include lectures, gallery talks, concerts, and other experiential formats. The Fellowship will provide an opportunity to participate in all aspects of public engagement in the museum setting, including teaching, exhibition development, and interpretation. In addition, the Fellow will support relationships and develop programs that serve academic audiences, including students and faculty.

Experience in the following areas is preferred: public programming; gallery or classroom teaching; excellent written communication skills; public speaking skills; background in educational theory and practice; computer skills, word-processing; and basic office skills.

• Plan and administer collection-related and special exhibition programming that presents educational opportunities for museum audiences in coordination with museum curators and community colleagues.

• Work with the Director of Education and the Development Department to secure funding for public programs; ensure that all funding stipulations are fulfilled in compliance with program grants.

• Plan and monitor budgets, evaluate, and document all program activities.

• Support exhibition development processes including visitor learning goals and interpretive strategies.


• Develop and manage current programming for students and faculty in collaboration with higher education colleagues.

• Plan and monitor budgets, evaluate, and document all program activities.


• Cultivate and maintain already established professional relationships and coordinate events with co-sponsors and community partners.

• Depending on teaching experience, serve as gallery educator for adults, school and university groups, and K-12 teachers.


Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably Master’s degree) in Art History, Museum Education or related field.

• Museum experience preferred (Internships or other)

• Strong knowledge of museum education theory and practice as well as art history.

Skills and Abilities

• Must have the capacity to work in close cooperation with a wide range of people including museum staff and the community.

• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects.

• Budget management skills.

• Strong writing and editing skills.

• Close attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

• Aptitude in MS Office programs including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

• Must have flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
