JOB SUMMARY:
The Manager of Volunteer Programs and Internships develops, maintains, and supervises all volunteer, internship, work-study, and externship programs at the New England Aquarium. The manager is responsible for recruiting, screening, training, retaining, appreciating, and resolving conflicts for all volunteers, interns, work-study, and externs.

This is a Full Time Regular position. Hours are Monday- Friday with occasional night/ weekend hours required for events.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides overall leadership for volunteer and college internship program, as well as special projects, such as judicial/community service placements, corporate, community, and one-shot group volunteer opportunities.
2. Develops strategies for recruiting, placing, and retaining volunteers and interns.
3. Develops diversity initiatives for volunteer and college internship programs.
4. Develops, recommends, and implements policies and practices related to volunteers and interns.
5. Screens and hires volunteers, and manages volunteer relations issues, as applicable.
6. Develops and provides primary orientation and supplementary training for all volunteers and interns.
7. Develops, maintains, and expands partnerships with volunteer and intern recruiting sources (colleges, community and business groups).
8. Recruits off-site for college interns and community volunteers.
9. Communicates with departments to determine volunteer needs and source new volunteer opportunities within New England Aquarium.
10. Trains and oversees departmental volunteer site supervisors. Provides training in supervision and management of volunteers. Creates and maintains performance and training standards.
11. Responds to volunteer needs and issues. Mediates and manages conflict between volunteers and departments and among volunteers.
12. Prepares and manages the Volunteer department budget.
13. Supervises staff and volunteers working in the Volunteer department.
14. Seeks external funding, including researching and locating available grants, to support volunteer, internship and work-study programs.
15. Coordinates, manages recruits, and orients work-study students for all departments throughout the Aquarium.
16. Coordinates, manages, recruits, and orients veterinary externs for the animal health department.
17. Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION:
Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years related experience.
Specific degree preferred: volunteer administration, adult development, human resources, education, psychology, or sociology.

• Strong oral and written interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to engage and speak to groups and individuals in a motivational and inclusive manner.
• Demonstrated community collaboration/networking skills and experience
• Self-motivation, flexibility and ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Experience working with diverse racial/socioeconomic populations preferred.
• Knowledge of legal, employment, and equal opportunity issues preferred.
