Overview

The Museum of Science and Industry’s Community Initiatives provides programs and experiences that deepen the engagement of youth, families, and communities in science and science-related disciplines, with a vision to inspire and motivate our children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and medicine. The Education Coordinator, Out of School Time Programs will coordinate, develop and implement science learning experiences that engage targeted and diverse audiences in science learning experiences both in the community and at the Museum.  This individual will play an active role in supporting after school science programs at 70+ community partner sites and expanding the impact of the program.

Responsibilities

  • Research, develop and implement out of school programs and curriculum in accordance with the objectives of the MSI’s Center for the Advancement of Science Education.
  • Collaborate with other Community Initiatives team members, other CASE program areas and MSI departments to develop and implement curriculum, training modules and other out of school time program components.
  • Coordinate and collaborate in the development and implementation of career fairs, family science nights, museum family days to deepen youth, family and community engagement in science.
  • Review existing content, curriculum, strategies, and research/evaluation to make recommendations and implement approved modifications.
  • Continually monitor programs for quality assurance and relevance to applicable state and national education standards.
  • Schedule and supervise volunteers and interns.
  • Order and maintain materials and supplies.
  • Collaborate with team leadership and team members on projects with community partners.
  • Communicate and attend meetings with external partners regarding program logistics.  Act as liaison to create and maintain productive partnerships with Museum in the Park, Chicago Park District, and community-based organization partners.
  • Compile financial reports and maintain program budgets.  Track and report program attendance.
  • Work with External Affairs staff on writing funding proposals and reports to donors.
  • Maintain departmental responsibilities (meetings, email, phone, etc.)
  • Assist with other education programs as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, science or related discipline required.
  • Candidates must have 3-5 years of prior education or youth development experience in a formal or informal setting.
  • Program development experience required.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences required.
  • Familiarity with programming in a variety of educational settings including community-based organizations, schools, science centers and/or other museums.
  • Strong affinity for science and technology.
  • Must be creative and dynamic; exhibit enthusiasm, initiative, flexibility, and openness to new ideas.
  • Detail oriented; excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking required.
  • Must demonstrate comfort in a team environment, with strong collaboration skills.
  • An ability to work on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent project management, planning and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual ability a plus.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher) required.
  • Will be required to travel to community partner sites throughout the Chicago area.
