*The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world¹s finest museums, seeks
an Education Assistant to teach and help develop, execute, and evaluate
gallery programs with a focus on programs that help visitors look at art in
new ways, connect art with other disciplines, and foster social and
informal interaction among participants. S/he researches potential guest
speakers and supports their teaching; attends to logistics for various
programs; broadens the audience for programs at the Met through proactive
and strategic marketing; schedules and supervises volunteers; and guides
interns who assist with these programs. The Education Assistant teaches
regularly and widely across the department. Frequent weekend and Friday
evening work required.****

*PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:*

– Support, teach, and co-teach select programs, focusing on gallery
programs by guest presenters, short-courses, and multi-modal events: Help
identify best presenters; gather speaker information and images; tour the
galleries in advance of programs; help guest speakers prepare; co-teach
with or host guest presenters and regularly teach a variety of gallery
programs. (30%).****
– Help identify ways to reach target audiences and promote programs
through multiple vehicles; draft copy, provide images, proofread, and
liaise with Education Publications, Digital Media, and Communications;
and
document programs for both evaluative and promotional purposes. (25%).***

– Support program evaluation and assessment of teaching by contractual
educators: observe programs; helping develop and administer evaluation
instruments; analyze data; and prepare or contribute to reports, as
needed.
(15%).****
– Teach across other program areas and assist with gallery teaching
training and volunteer training. (10%).****
– Coordinate logistics and ensure successful execution of select
programs. (10%).****
– Assist with intern supervision and volunteer recruitment, training,
and schedule coordination. (10%).****

*REQUIREMENTS and QUALIFICATIONS:*

*Experience and Skills:*

– Ability to teach a variety of audiences.****
– Demonstrable research skills and ability to identify potential guest
experts from within New York City¹s vast and diverse communities.****
– Ability to design evaluation methods appropriate to programs, analyze
results and mine audience information, and succinctly report on results.*

– Experience promoting events or programs and demonstrable ability to
build audiences.****
– Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively
within and beyond the institution.****
– Excellent organizational skills, follow-through, and attention to
detail, including ability to work on multiple programs and deadlines
simultaneously.****
– Demonstrable ability to anticipate and problem-solve independently.****
– Excellent communication skills, including the ability to tailor speech
and writing to a variety of audiences and purposes and to communicate
effectively through a range of print and digital vehicles.****

*Knowledge and Education:*

– Master¹s degree or active studies toward master¹s degree required, in
any field of the humanities or education/social sciences. Demonstrable
knowledge of and interest in art and either art or cultural history.****
– Minimum 2 years experience coordinating programs or events.****
– Minimum 2 years experience in a professional environment.****
– Minimum 1 year experience teaching in the cultural field, preferably
in a museum or art gallery. Demonstrable understanding of museum-based
teaching and learning and of how to effectively engage audiences in a
gallery setting with original works of art through multiple modes.
Demonstrable ability to relate art, including historical objects, to
other
disciplines, subjects, and to contemporary life.****
– Minimum 1 year experience teaching audiences and establishing
pedagogical goals for these. Demonstrable knowledge of current approaches
to learning.****
– Demonstrable knowledge of evaluation methods.****
– Command of Microsoft Office Suite and of various digital tools to
produce and edit digital content.****
– Command and demonstrated use of social media tools as means of
building community and reaching new audiences.****
