The Southern Museum is currently seeking an energetic individual for the position of Curator.

The Curator is responsible for overseeing the artifact collection and exhibitions of the museum.  Knowledge of Civil War and Reconstruction, Industrialization, and/ or Southeastern Railroad history is necessary to this position.  The incumbent must demonstrate sufficient curatorial and collections management experience and be proficient in PastPerfect.  Candidates are to be familiar with varying aspects of exhibition design and be able to develop new gallery components and interpretation as well as assemble, disassemble, and pack travelling exhibitions.  Excellent communication and writing skills are essential as the curator will be expected to conduct historical research, develop interpretive text, write financial grants, develop long range plans, and make verbal presentations.  Incumbent needs to be a team player and contribute to a wide range of museum activities including providing tours, participating in special events, and working ticket and sales operations.

The ideal candidate will possess at the minimum a bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, education or related field along with at least three years of full-time professional curatorial experience in a history museum.  This is a city government position with a starting salary of $39,000 to $41,500 (based upon experience) and excellent benefits.
