The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is currently hiring for a Curator of Education
and Visitor Engagement. The Curator of Education and Visitor Engagement is
responsible for the vision, strategic design, development, and supervision
of the Education Department. Primary to this role is the creation,
development, and ongoing management of all educational programs,
exhibitions, interpretation, and visitor engagement initiatives, and the
staff and volunteers within those areas. This position requires a museum
professional that is an educator, manager, and innovator, skilled in leading
the creation of a variety of programs that support the museum’s mission
through visitor engagement and revenue enhancement. The Curator of Education
and Visitor Engagement serves as a member of the senior management team;
works in collaboration with administrators, staff, volunteers, and community
colleagues; and reports to the director.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

General
Work in close partnership with the director to create, manage, and direct
the development of strategic plans for the museum’s education, engagement,
and interpretation programs, in close collaboration with all stakeholders
and partners, within and outside the museum.
Function as an active liaison for visitor engagement across all areas of the
museum.
Foster a culture of open communication and spirited collaboration among all
museum departments and divisions.
Design and support internal training initiatives for all staff, which are
content-based.
Plan, develop, implement, and manage assigned budgets and allocation of
resources.
Identify and pursue opportunities for earned and contributed revenue through
programs, services, gifts, and grants.
Identify, recruit, and hire highly skilled educators and appropriately
train, supervise, and evaluate their performances according to the highest
museum standards
Represent the museum in the local, regional, national, and international
museum arenas, and make appropriate contributions to the field.

Education
Oversee the daily operations within education, including lectures, public
programs, art classes, school and teacher programs, community programs, and
accessibility programming.
Plan, develop, and implement a diverse yearly schedule of program offerings,
including onsite programs, partnerships, the utilization of distance
learning, new media, and other technology.
Develop programming plans with all other museum departments.
Ensure the museum enjoys a lively and productive relationship with educators
and the education community locally, regionally, and nationally.
Develop initiatives for educational impact in the community and schools, and
support initiatives for arts-infused, visual literacy curriculum.

Interpretation
Oversee and lead the development of comprehensive interpretation plans for
the museum’s collections, exhibitions, and architecture.
Create a diverse offering of interpretation vehicles in print, online, and
through interactive programs.
Serve as the museum’s representative in the educational community and the
community-at-large.
Maintain the museum’s unique voice through all interpretive communications.
Assess new partnership opportunities for digital interpretation, in
collaboration with the museum’s marketing and public relations department,
and online strategy group.

Visitor Engagement
Establish a plan for ongoing visitor assessment, data collection, and
improvement.
Identify and maintain key community partnerships.
Serve as a proactive advocate for all visitors to the museum, including
adults, youth, teens, families, teachers, students, and those with special
accessibility needs.

Exhibitions (in partnership with Curatorial, as required)
Establish a dynamic program of exhibitions drawn from internal and external
sources that are based on the museum’s educational, curatorial, and visitor
engagement goals.
Clearly articulate a role and philosophy for exhibitions within the
institutional mission that augments the Collection over multiple years.
Guide the creation of internal exhibitions, including building essential
partnerships, scholarship, and research across museum departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in art history, fine arts, museum studies, art education, or
studio art required; additional unrelated degrees a plus.
Knowledgeable about current practices in museum/community education,
exhibition design and development, interpretation, and visitor studies.
Passionate about being a member of a team developing new art initiatives
with a strong visitor-centered community dynamic.
Evening and weekend hours required.

Five to ten years of progressive leadership in the museum field.
