The Chrysler Museum of Art is currently accepting resumes for the new position of Interactive Media Specialist. This position will report to the Director of Education and work collaboratively with the following departments: Education and Interpretation, Communications, Curatorial, Visitor Services, and Information Technology.

Primary Purpose

The Interactive Media Specialist will work collaboratively across departments to develop and create interactive experiences that inspire 21st century museum visitors and help make the Chrysler’s collections and exhibitions meaningful and exciting.

Essential Functions

This position is responsible for leading the development and implementation of multimedia tours and app development in support of the Museum’s collection, building, exhibitions, programs, and related activities. This position is also responsible for leading discussions with internal staff on the conceptualization, specification, and delivery of both visitor-facing digital initiatives such as mobile tours and single apps based on the collection, the museum building, or other programmatic initiatives. Specifically, the Interactive Media Specialist would:

  • Develop mobile applications that reach beyond traditional modes of content delivery
  • Produce interactive technologies that seek visitor input
  • Create experiences that merge art making and technology
  • Generate concepts for technologies that inspire staff to think in new ways about works of art and visitor engagement
  • Participate in planning teams to experiment, conduct research and evaluate technologies with both staff and visitors
  • Coordinate with Webmaster and IT Department to integrate new interactive concepts into the Chrysler Experience.
  • Serve as prime developer for video content and assets management including production and post-production
  • Develop and implement plan for Distance Learning
  • Develop and oversee a plan for maintaining and upgrading equipment, applications, and programs for visitor experiences

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all app development projects from conception through completion
  • Create, execute, and manage project proposals, specifications, schedules, and budgets
  • Oversee all project deliverables produced by external vendors from wireframes and design to QA testing
  • Assist in developing, shaping, and defining the experience of the museum visitor, both physical and virtual, while creating media that meets the interpretative goals of curatorial and education staff along with objectives from other stakeholders
  • Serve as main liaison with curatorial, education, and other departments to define, schedule, and manage content deliverables and copyright approvals
  • Deliver finished product on time and on budget
  • Ensure quality and consistency across all media
  • Interface with other museum staff and external vendors about the deployment of apps in the museum environment and about the promotion of apps to visitors
  • Create tour and app analytics to monitor, track, and document app initiatives
  • Train staff responsible for assisting visitors and troubleshooting equipment

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Experience required in media production and digital project management, ideally for the visual arts, museums, cultural organizations, or related field
  • BA or BS required; advanced degree with a concentration in digital media, visual art, or moving image arts desired
  • Proven experience with app development for iOS and Android operating systems, and with mobile website development
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and video formats, within a CMS environment
  • Technical familiarity with media editing tools and software, such as Final Cut Pro
  • Engagement with new developments in multimedia solutions, technologies, and UI designs
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle, production best practices, quality assurance methodology, code management, and project management techniques
  • Must have solid experience developing and managing budgets as well as project plans
  • Ability to produce multiple projects on time and work independently
  • Communication and organizational abilities are essential
