The American Swedish Historical Museum (ASHM) was founded in 1926 to preserve and present Swedish and Swedish-American history and culture to a broad audience. The museum is built on land that was part of the colony that Sweden had in America from 1638-1655.  It is both a museum with a remarkable collection and a community of people who are interested in the culture of Sweden and Swedish-America. It offers programming and exhibitions covering a diverse array of topics from the Vikings, colonial history, Swedish literature, scientific achievements to modern art and environmental sustainability.
