Under the supervision of the Artists Gallery Director, the Manager, Gallery Programs is responsible for the commercial success of a gallery. This involves overseeing the diverse activities involved in assisting clients and running a gallery.

This is a market-led position that demands commercial focus and flair, in addition to an interest in art. Responsibilities range from dealing with clients to evaluating and improving the fine art sales and leasing program to collaborating with the Director and the Exhibitions Supervisor on the design of exhibitions. Because of this scope, the role demands a combination of artistic awareness, business acumen, interpersonal skills and practical abilities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Program Research, Planning, Design and Implementation

  • Identify current trends in the art world in order to source artwork for residential, corporate and institutional clients cultivate stronger exhibitions, gallery programs, staff training methods and enhanced marketing strategies.
  • Plans, develops and evaluates the fine art sales and leasing program, including ongoing evaluation and improvement of our online storefront, purchase fulfillment and delivery.
  • Serves as a chief planner along with the Director and the Exhibitions Supervisor of the Annual Warehouse Sale.
  • Contacts independent curators to solicit proposals for contemporary art projects.
  • Works closely with individual artists, developing relationships with new artists, and extending relationships with established artists from the gallery’s roster to source appropriate artwork that meet client needs.
  • Fosters external relationships in the art community to further promote the Gallery and its role in the Bay Area art as sales and rental gallery.
  • Cultivates an active art collecting base of potential clients.
  • Attend inter-departmental meetings and participate in discussions relating to the Gallery and the Museum.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises frontline staff, including the Corporate Art Coordinator, the Gallery Coordinator and the Administrative Assistant.
  • Develop and implement a system of on-site training through which staff develop their full potential as arts professionals, including implementing the twice monthly artist talks, weekly staff art critiques and staff coaching.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the Gallery, including the selecting art for the inventory, verifies invoices, collection of client payments, respond to inquiries, and resolve conflicts regarding pricing and payments.
  • Negotiates with other galleries and other third parties involved in the sale of artists work.
  • Supervise gallery staff, delivery personnel, and on-call assistants.
  • Project expenses and prepare budget to support sales activities.
  • Develop, review, and implement procedures and policies to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
  • Work with Director to devise strategies to generate new business and reach new audiences.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:  Possession of a baccalaureate degree.  Background in arts administration and/or contemporary arts preferred. 

 

Work Experience:  Minimum 5 years related experience in a gallery.

 

Skills and Abilities: Must possess mature judgment.  Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills.  Strong aptitude for planning and organization.  Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others.  Establish goals, set priorities, and handle diverse relationships and deadlines.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with museum staff, clients, vendors, volunteers, and members of the artistic community.  Strong background in, and ongoing interest in contemporary art is essential.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands: Handling of artwork.  May be needed to work nights and weekends.

Special Environmental Factors: Very close office setting.
