The State House Curator is responsible for day to day oversight of the fine arts and artifact collections in the Massachusetts State House, including all paintings, two and three dimensional sculptures, wall murals, plaques and tablets, historic artifacts, important architectural and decorative arts, both on display and in storage, and advising on the historic preservation of the building according to the mission and directives of the Massachusetts Art Commission (as stated in Section 6 of Chapter 38 of the Acts of 2013 https://malegislature.gov/Laws/SessionLaws/Acts/2013/Chapter38) and for implementing programming for care of these collections according to the codes of ethics and standards of practice of the American Alliance of Museums and the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.

All curatorial, registrarial, administrative and policy making duties associated with this position resides with the Curator as sole staff. This position peforms other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in business administration, business management, or public administration, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:
I. A Master’s degree with a major in business administration, management, public administration, industrial engineering, industrial psychology, or hospital administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*

II. A Doctorate with a major in business administration, management, public administration, industrial engineering, industrial psychology, or hospital administration may be substituted for the required experience.*

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: None.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree in Art History, Museum Studies and/or Historic Preservation; 15+ years experience in collection management and drivers license.

Demonstrated professional experience in historic, public art collection setting.

Requires excellent analytical, organizational and independent work skills.

Comments:

The Curator will work a maximum of 4 full days per week.
