POSITION PURPOSE:

SFMOMA is committed to providing high quality programs and resources for schools and teachers in the Bay Area and beyond.  As the museum looks to its reopening in 2016, we aim to become a leader in promoting the collaborative teaching of the art of our time across subject areas by offering an array of programs for educators and pioneering new digital content strategies to introduce teachers to the most valuable online teaching resources. Under the supervision of the Associate Curator of Education, the Education Associate for Teacher Engagement and Resources coordinates and implements professional development and educational programs, develops advanced content and systems that support teachers’ use of online contemporary art resources, engages with existing online teacher communities and contributes to teachers’ program sharing platforms for K-12 teachers.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working closely with the Associate Curator of Education:

  • Develop, coordinate, deliver, and assess a range of inspiring and creative digital and non-digital programs and resources, including curriculum content, for K-12 students and teachers to use in their classrooms and at SFMOMA.
  • Commission teachers, artists and other specialists to create content related to SFMOMA’s collections and exhibitions, as well as to key concepts in modern and contemporary art, for K-12 educators.
  • Work with Teacher Advisory group to gather input about the design of SFMOMA’s offerings for teachers.
  • Maintain a robust presence on social media platforms and online curriculum/advice sharing sites for teachers to convey content and event information to a dedicated teacher audience, achieving agreed upon performance metrics on reach and sharing.
  • Create and implement online traffic-building and engagement strategies, including online access to live teacher events, ensuring best practice search-engine-optimization principles are applied to all web distributed educational resources.
  • Collaborate with relevant members of the Content Strategy and Digital Engagement department and the Marketing and Communications department in developing new online content/services or social media campaigns.

FURTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain knowledge of current art education policies, standards, theories and practice in public schools and museum contexts, including inclusion policies and practices.
  • Maintain a high-level understanding and familiarity of the trends in digital learning and resources to ensure this informs the design and development of new initiatives.
  • Act as primary liaison for teacher programs and resources.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Training:

  • Undergraduate degree in art history, art education, museum studies or closely related subject, or equivalent combination of education and experience with demonstrable interest in modern and contemporary art.
  • Graduate degree preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of two years experience in art education, including working with teachers and students/youth.
  • Interdisciplinary experience combining the visual arts and other disciplines, such as social studies, language arts or science is a plus.
  • Experience working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Experience in event programming and coordination preferred.
  • Previous classroom experience a plus.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong project coordination and organizational skills with an emphasis in attention to detail and follow-up.
  • Understanding of California’s K-12 education system, with particular understanding of current 9-12 arts and humanities curriculum, including Common Core standards.
  • Knowledge of modern and contemporary art, museum educational programming, and the Bay Area artistic community.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and public speaking skills and the ability to work enthusiastically and effectively with visitors, Museum staff, program participants and external vendors.
  • Excellent written skills and a thorough understanding of current K-12 educational pedagogy.
  • Patience and flexibility while working in a dynamic public environment.
  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, follow-up on assignments and work effectively on several projects concurrently with a minimum of supervision.
  • Passion for new technology and digital learning.
  • Understanding of common multimedia presentation software, visual display systems, and their application to public settings.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and sharing sites commonly used by teachers.
  • Experience devising programs and resources for a digital environment.
  • Good understanding of emerging technology and the ability to work closely with technical counterparts.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.

Physical Demands:  May require a lot of work on feet, moving of light furniture, and bending.

Special Environmental Factors:  Must be able to work in a busy, active environment and may be required to handle large groups of people.
