*Position Description:* Join the Education Team as the Deputy Director
of Education. The Deputy Director of Education will lead the Education
Department’s interpretation efforts in order to connect Exhibitions and
other Museum content to a wide variety of audiences, both in the museum
and on-line. S/he will work as part of a team, collaborating with the
Curatorial, Collections, Digital and Emerging Media and Visitor Services
Departments.

*MAJOR DUTIES*:.Provides leadership in the development of a
multigenerational maker space, oversees its staffing and works with
curatorial and emerging media teams to program the space..Works with
curators, education and emerging media teams to develop interpretive
support for visitors for both collection-based and temporary exhibitions
including but not limited to systems of interpretative information,
audio, website content, in-gallery learning spaces, etc..Initiates and
oversees research and evaluation projects focused on visitor experience
and interpretive resources in collaboration with other
departments..Establishes interpretive guidelines for the Museum that
foster best practices in the field and reflect Cooper-Hewitt’s new
mission..Works with the education staff to develop interpretative
materials for exhibitions and collections, reviewing, revising and
augmenting materials as installations and staff change..Oversees the
development of educational programs, selecting staff, both paid and
volunteer, to carry out these programs. Creates programs to enable the
general public and professional sin the design field to use the Museum
and its resources..Supervises staff to assure that all educational
activities within the Museum are coordinated in order to achieve maximum
effectiveness and avoid duplication in effect and

*Qualifications*: Address basic requirements, specialized experience and
competencies:

*Basic Requirements:* All applicants must meet the following education
requirements: Degree that included or was supplemented by major study in
education or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position or
combination of education and experience – courses equivalent to a major
in education, or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position,
plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided
knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful
completion of a 4 year course of study described in A above. In addition
to meeting the basic requirements above applicants must meet the
following criteria: You qualify for this position if you possess one
year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in
the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. Specialized
Experience: For this position, specialized experience is defined as:
experience ensuring that exhibitions interpret and present design in a
manner accessible to a wide range of audiences and are consistent with
current museum and education theory by planning prototyping to support
exhibition and program content development, including maker spaces.
Experience may also include developing and delivering on-going audience
research in all areas of museum education and visitor interface,
including evaluation, exhibitions, local and national programming and
public spaces (resume must address specialized experience).
Competencies: Your resume will be used to evaluate your experience,
education, and/or training that address the competencies below .Describe
your knowledge of museum educational concepts and practices as they
relate to exhibition development in order to infuse diverse learning
opportunities into exhibitions. .Describe your knowledge of learning
theories to develop strategies to reach diverse audiences through
exhibitions and other informal and formal learning opportunities and
resources. .Describe your knowledge of Design sufficient to collaborate
with curators in the development of exhibitions and interpretive
materials. .Describe your skill and experience in supervisory skills to
lead assigned staff in ongoing tasks and special projects.
