Since our founding in 1901, the Toledo Museum of Art has earned a global reputation for the quality of our collection, our innovative and extensive education programs, and our architecturally significant campus. More than 30,000 works of art represent American and European painting, the history of art in glass, ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian works, Asian and African art, medieval art, sculpture, decorative arts, graphic arts, and modern and contemporary art.  

To accommodate the ever growing collection and demand for art education, the Museum campus has grown exponentially since its founding. From its humble first exhibition space in two rented rooms, the Museum has grown to cover approximately 36 acres with six buildings.

Thanks to the benevolence of its founders, as well as the continued support of its members, the Toledo Museum of Art remains a privately-endowed, non-profit institution and opens its collection to the public—free of charge—six days a week, 309 days a year. We are closed on Mondays and major holidays.

SUMMARY

The Toledo Museum of Art is looking for a Manager of Programs and Audience Engagement that will be an advocate for the Museum in the community and an advocate for the community in the Museum.  This dynamic, innovative thinker will be responsible for creating a portfolio of programs and activities at the Museum that continue to engage our core audiences while also brining new, diverse visitors to TMA.  The incumbent will be a change agent at the Museum and will make the Museum a change agent in the city.

Key to the role are excellent communication skills, which will be demonstrated by an ability to liaise with community members and external service-providers and performers.  Attention to detail is critical in ensuring that the Museum delivers in its programs a quality consistent with its collection.

This position will be responsible for working with internal and external stakeholders to develop novel ideas for programs that can drive attendance, provide quality experiences with the Museum’s art, and engage audiences with the concept of Visual Literacy.  The incumbent will work with staff and members of the community to create, plan and organize compelling public and glass programming for general interest and to coincide with major events at the Museum, such as exhibitions. Evaluation of programs is a key part of the role, and it will be expected that metrics and benchmarks will be created to analyze program performance and guide future programming decisions.  Additionally, this role will be responsible for managing a budget and assuring that museum programming is in support of the Museum’s strategic objectives.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The incumbent performs the following essential duties.  Other duties may be assigned as needs arise.

  • Develop programming that engages new audiences at the Museum.
  • Responsible for developing benchmarks and metrics to assess program performance (including the engagement of new audiences); expected to experiment with new programs, drop unsuccessful ones, and iterate others.
  • Work with the Curatorial, Family Center, Glass Programs, Visitor Engagement & PR/Marketing to develop new programming, research possible ideas, topics and presenters that support Public and Glass Programming, Visitor Engagement, and Toledo Museum of Art Strategic Objectives.
  • Deliver well-managed, on-time and on-budget programs by coordinating and executing all planning and logistical details related to staff, contractors/performers, contract execution, payment distribution, space reservations, signage, marketing, visitor experience, etc. in accordance with the Museums Strategic Objectives.
  • Coordinate schedule with multiple public program generators, including the Glass Studio, Development, and Education (including public tours and art experiences).
  • Develop modifications of ongoing and established programs by assessing the results of these programs’ evaluations and by aligning programs with Strategic Objectives.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships that fulfill Museum Strategic Objectives.
  • Produce and oversee comprehensive budgets that align Museum and community resources (financial, human, and material) while collaborating with TMA staff.
  • Organizes set-ups with utility staff.
  • Work with PR/Marketing to publicize, promote and develop audiences for public programs as well as to make changes to scheduling as the need arises.
  • Host special out of town speakers to ensure quality of experience while at the Toledo Museum of Art.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to the Director of Visitor Engagement, but must work with and for the Museum’s varied constituents and community partners.
  • Works collaboratively with and as a member of the Visitor Engagement Group.
  • Works closely with Visitor Engagement, Curatorial, Education, and Communications to generate programmatic ideas that dovetail with other activities at the Museum.
  • Works with Marketing and Visitor Services to help promote programs and other activities.
  • Liaises with Facilities and Utilities as well as Security about event management requirements and planning.
  • Occasionally collaborates with the Volunteer Coordinator and the Professional Services Team for support.
  • Works with Development for events where donors are involved.
