Position Title:                   Manager of Tours and Visitor Learning Programs

Department:                      Education

Reports to:                         Director of Visitor Learning

Type of position:             Full time, Monday-Friday 9-5 (with occasional evenings and weekend days); salaried/exempt

 

Position Summary

The Manager of Tours and Visitor Learning Programs plays an integral role in engaging museum visitors in positive and meaningful experiences through both direct and indirect ways.  S/he links the Museum with the public by coordinating all aspects of public and private talks and tours for school children, college students, and adults. S/he also manages the Museum’s volunteers, including recruitment and training, and works closely with the Director of Visitor Learning on the administration of the Museum’s Museum Teacher program.

 

Responsibilities

  • Schedule all adult, college, school groups and free public tours, providing clear communication of Museum tour policies through a variety of media (telephone, written materials, web, in person greeting of groups) and processing financial transactions
  • Manage recruitment, training, scheduling and ongoing professional development of the Museum’s 150+ volunteers
  • Work closely with the Director of Visitor Learning on recruitment, training and ongoing communication with the Museum’s 50+ Museum Teachers (docents)
  • Oversee recruitment and management of college interns to assist Tour and Visitor Learning programs on an as-needed basis
  • Generate and analyze monthly statistics and maintain a database of all current and prospective volunteers and Museum Teachers
  • Initiate new ideas for marketing tours and develop innovative Visitor Learning Programs on an as-needed basis
  • Develop and lead all visitor learning programs, including tours and talks
  • Coordinate important department-wide activities and take the lead in team-building with other Museum departments (for example, Visitor Services, Security, Marketing)
  • Assist the education department with administrative tasks, as required

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree and strong interest and experience in museum teaching, experience with VTS a plus
  • Previous experience (at least 2-3 years) coordinating a tour/visitor services program and working with volunteers
  • Demonstrated success designing and conducting training programs; strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills that balance the needs of tour groups with the Gardner Museum’s unique environment
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to follow-up
  • Familiarity with accounting and financial record-keeping procedures; proficient in Word and Excel; experience with PatronEdge a plus
