With more than 115,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the largest art museum in the western United States. A museum of international stature as well as a vital part of Southern California, LACMA shares its vast collections through exhibitions, public programs and research facilities that attract nearly a million visitors annually. LACMA’s eight building complex is located on twenty acres in the heart of Los Angeles, halfway between the ocean and downtown. The campus is undergoing a ten-year expansion and renovation known as the Transformation and designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Reporting to the Director for the Program of the Art of the Ancient Americas, the Assistant/Associate Curator will support the department head in cultivating scholarly relationships both locally and abroad, demonstrating creativity and initiative in managing the collection and engaging with the Los Angeles community.Some duties include: manages the rotation of permanent collection galleries; assists in the development of scheduled exhibitions that are a priority for the department and the museum; writes for both scholarly and general audiences; donor cultivation and acquisitions; serves as the department’s liaison to collections management, conservation, education and other internal museum staff; updates the collections database. An Equal Opportunity Employer: It is the policy of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to provide all persons with equal employment practices and opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, veteran or marital status or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local law.

Job Requirements

The qualified candidate will be fully bilingual in English and Spanish (written and oral) and will have a master’s degree in Art History, with a PhD or ABD preferred. At least three years of curatorial experience, or equivalent object based work is required. The successful candidate will be an experienced scholar with a specific expertise in Mesoamerican art.
