This position is responsible for all aspects of museum exhibition installations; helps oversee the safe handling and transport of all artworks to and from the museum, and assists the Curatorial Department with a range of collections management and administrative support.

Duties and Responsibilities – Essential Functions

Exhibitions

Plan, prioritize, and schedule installation of artwork, exhibition labels, and didactics
Assess resource needs and determines adjustments as required
Assist in the development of exhibition budgets
Maintain the museum’s workshop and related tools, hardware, and other equipment.
Inspect and maintain the galleries daily, including dusting and cleaning of artwork, changing lights, paint touch-up
Inspect and clean collection storage
Assist with developing and implementing procedures and guidelines for the safe handling and movement of all art objects
Assist with collections management, including the inventory of artworks, and help with database profiles
Document packing, crating, installation as needed
Submit purchase orders for collection supplies (archival supplies, installation hardware, packing materials etc.)
Rehouse artwork: box construction, replace old materials
Manage and prepare the packing and unpacking of artworks, preparing works for exhibition (mat, frame, stretch, etc.)
Assist the registrar with fine arts shipping arrangements with shipping companies
Assist with developing and implementing procedures and guidelines for the safe handling and movement of all art objects
Supervises curatorial interns, volunteers and works with artists, gallerists, collectors, colleagues
Responds to collection inquiries and outside exhibition proposals

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications for consideration:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Design, Studio Art, Art History, Museum Studies or a related field or a combination of education and experience will be considered.

Professional Experience: A minimum of three to five years of museum or gallery experience is required. The candidate will have a combination of exhibition and collection-related experience with exhibition design, graphics, labels and didactics, exhibition construction, gallery painting, and lighting. Curatorial-related experience includes research and planning, maintenance of master exhibition records, files and calendars, the preparation of exhibitions, maintains the permanent collections and loaned artworks, organizes art storage, and has experience with written materials.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of art handling procedures for two and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights
Knowledge in using the standard tools, practices and methods used in painting, rough and finish carpentry and pedestal fabrication
Experience with the use and application of different materials such as various kinds of lumber, fabrics, plastics, mechanical fasteners, and adhesives
Extensive knowledge of design and construction of museum exhibits; mount making principles; lighting concepts and systems; safety regulations, practices, and procedures; and ADA requirements
Knowledge of A/V and multi-media installation
Knowledge of American Alliance of Museums professional policies and best practices
Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, implement, and simultaneously oversee a variety of projects
Prepare cost estimates and make sound purchasing recommendations
Develop and implement design concepts
Participate effectively as a member of a cross-functional team and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, the general public, and representatives and colleagues from other museums
A valid driver’s license

Desirable Qualifications/Attributes: The position requires a broad variety of exhibitions and curatorial experience. The candidate must demonstrate flexibility, patience, strong organizational skills, excellent communication skills and hands-on abilities. He or she should be able to work in a fast-paced team environment as well as alone and have the ability to think creatively and problem solve.

Language Skills: The position requires organized and clear communication skills with the ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports, and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. The position requires the ability to compute ratios and percentages.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to resolve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, the candidate should have intermediate to advanced computer skills: Proficient at Microsoft Office Suite applications that include PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Adobe. Knowledge of EmbARK Collections Management Software, Adobe Creative Suite, and AutoCad or other exhibition design software is preferred.

The physical and sensory abilities required for this position include:

Ability to speak clearly and with volume, required to carry on clear conversations in person, on the phone, and while in front of a large group

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; repetitive movement of hands, wrists or feet, reach with hands and arms; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly be able to lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds and move heavy objects as required. Some duties of this position would require being able to work outside for extended periods of time.
