The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is seeking a Teaching Artist for the Learning Through Art (LTA) program for the 2014-2015 school year (September-June). LTA sends teaching artists into New York City public elementary schools, where they collaborate with classroom teachers to lead art experiences related to the school curriculum.

The Learning Through Art program (LTA) places practicing artists in New York City public school classrooms, where they collaborate with teachers to create process-oriented art projects that examine ideas and themes related to the school curriculum. In these 10- to 20-week residencies, teaching artists introduce art techniques and concepts and encourage students to view, analyze, and discuss works of art.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct an in-school residency, generally one day each week for 20 weeks, working with three classes each day, for 90 minutes per class.
• Design art projects that students will complete over the course of the residency based on the classroom curriculum, an essential question, and works from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
• Within the residency teach mini-lessons on art techniques and skills that will be utilized to complete the project.
• Explore art works in the classroom using the inquiry method of questioning.
• Communicate with LTA Coordinator managing the residency for planning, troubleshooting, feedback, and a final review.
• Complete necessary administrative tasks related to the residency including but not limited to submitting program outline, weekly reports, ordering supplies, completing timesheets, and collecting photo releases from students.
• Prepare student artwork, writing, and documentation for A Year with Children exhibition.
• Work with school to mount in-school exhibition.
• Attend 2 full days of professional development; attend monthly artists meetings (8 per year).
• Support and collaborate with LTA volunteer in the classroom.

Qualifications and Requirements:
• BFA; MFA preferred; background in Visual Art, Art History, Education or related field
• Currently practicing and exhibiting artist
• Experience teaching art to elementary students
• Demonstrated commitment to museum or art education and multi-session art workshops for children

As this position is part-time and temporary (for the duration of the 2015 to 2015 academic year) there are no health benefits or paid time off entitlements.
