The Preparator is responsible for all aspects of museum exhibition installations and helps oversee the safe handling and movement of all works of art in the museum. This position assists with care and maintenance of the collection on display and in storage

POSITION RELATIONSHIPS: Works closely with members of the museum curatorial staff as well as other Brandywine staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Works with exhibition staff to plan logistics for exhibition and gallery installations
Creates digital exhibition design with Curators and Director and revises, as needed
Prepares objects for exhibition – including matting, framing, and mount making – or storage
Formats and fabricates labels and text panels for galleries, as needed
Supervises contract art handlers to install and deinstall works
Packing and crating of works for shipping
Assists with production and installation of exhibition graphics
Oversees lighting and monitors light levels in galleries
Maintains collections storage and workspace areas and ensures their cleanliness.
Assists with periodic inventories of collection
Works with photographer to facilitate access to works
Picks up artwork for exhibitions, loans, and possible acquisitions, using transportation provided by museum, as needed
Maintains inventory of exhibition cases, panels, platforms and other exhibition furniture.
Prepares budget information and procures estimates for supplies, as needed
Other related tasks as assigned by the Registrar.
Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:

3-5 professional experience handling works of art
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in the museum field is preferred.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing tasks and demands.
Communicate and work with all levels of constituents effectively.
Exceptional organizational skills; ability to set priorities and adapt as these priorities shift, handle multiple assignments and deadlines.
Displays excellent judgment, while operating in a flexible and professional manner.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and SketchUp, is preferred.
Basic carpentry and mount making skills
Experience with exhibition graphic fabricating equipment such as a Roland Camm 1 Pro vinyl cutting machine and a large format printer is preferred
Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 50lbs), climb ladders and use scissor lifts
Must possess a current driver’s license
