The Director of Lifelong Learning will design and implement the engagement strategy and program portfolio for adult and family learning delivered by the Academy, onsite, offsite, online and in person. Existing programs represent a broad range of offerings that include lectures, the Brilliant!Science festival, a conservation photography course, and evening programs and performances, among others.

This role will also oversee the Naturalist Center and the Early Explorers Cove, will cultivate external partners in program delivery, and will a key leader as part of the Citizen Science team, as well as the development of our strategy for online learning. The Director will design, develop, and implement strategies for evaluating the impact of lifelong learning programs and for expanding external partnerships that are regional and global in scope.

This position will report to the Chief Public Engagement Officer and Roberts Dean of Education, and will be part of the management team for the Public Engagement and Education Division, as well as the Academy Leadership Team. The Director will supervise a team of 20+ educators, program designers, citizen science coordinators, and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead strategic planning for the Academy’s programs designed for adult learners, ranging from science festivals, to lectures, to online experiences, to courses and supervise the manager of these programs.
Lead the development of the programmatic strategy for the Naturalist Center, a drop-in resource and learning center for visitors to the Academy, and supervise the manager of this team.
Lead the development of the programmatic strategy for the Early Explorer’s Cove, a drop-in learning space for families with children ages 5 and younger, and supervise the manager of this team.
Develop and implement a strategy for family learning that supports our Membership goals and creates a pathway of learning for members as they move through their life course.
Partner with other programmatic areas that deliver programs for adults and families, including, but not limited to, the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability, Membership, Public Programs, Teacher and Youth Education, and the Morrison Planetarium and Visualization Studio.
Identify and implement strategies within the Lifelong Learning portfolio that engage learners in individual and collective action for the environment, as part of the Academy’s mission to “explore, explain, and sustain life.”
Participate on the leadership team for the Academy’s Citizen Science Initiative, which involves volunteers of all ages in documenting and protecting biodiversity.
Serve as one of the key external facing representatives for the Academy and develop partnerships with research, educational and community-based organizations in the region, and others as part of the Academy’s Global Academy strategy.
Serve as the Academy’s point person for several city-wide programs including the Bay Area Science Festival, the Academy’s Brilliant!Science festival, and other initiatives.
Work closely with the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability to define the programmatic strategy for adult and other learners, enlist the participation of Academy scientists in the delivery of those programs, and support Academy scientists in the design of other educational programs.
Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and measures for impact.
Interact regularly with special events staff and stay informed about corporate and other events at the Academy and what opportunities they might present for partnerships.
Follow all Academy safety regulations.

Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in natural or social sciences, science education, public policy, or related field. Master’s or advanced degree preferred.
1-2 years experience in developing education or outreach programs in an academic, informal education, or research environment.
7+ years experience in program strategy and implementation for adult, family or other audiences.
7+ years of direct supervisory experience of a team of educators, program designers, or community activists.
3-4 years experience in developing and implementing complex programmatic partnerships involving multiple organizations.
Experience in a wide variety of sectors (e.g. community-based organizations, universities, private sector businesses, advocacy organizations) preferred.
Experience with development of free-choice online experiences, MOOCs, or other related types of online learning preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Confident, articulate leader who enjoys an external facing partnership role and can be both hands on and strategic
Skilled at developing internal collaborative processes and participation in a large organization
Strong organizational, managerial and supervisory skills
Extensive knowledge of scientists, scientific organizations, environmental organizations, science performers, and potential science or sustainability partners
Strong public speaking and written communication skills
Demonstrated experience in program evaluation and impact measurement
Familiarity with pedagogical and engagement trends in the area of adult and family learning
Familiarity with citizen science engagement strategies
Forward thinking and innovative and willing to experiment
Experience supervising diverse staff and volunteers
Expertise in managing a complex budget
Excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to work 1-2 evenings per week and 1-2 weekends per month.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.
