Reporting to the Senior Director of Individual Giving, the Director of Major Gifts is responsible for the restricted giving program for individual donors at SFMOMA. S/he manage the programs that prospect, cultivate, solicit, steward and upgrade individual donors in support of the museum’s exhibition, education, public programs, conservation, and other programmatic activities of the institution.

A primary responsibility of this position is the effective management of prospect and donor tracking systems that ensure successful cultivation and solicitation can be carried out by key staff and Trustees. The Director of Major Gifts will maintain a personal portfolio of approximately 80 individuals capable of making major gifts of $25,000 and above for museum programs annually and will report regularly on key metrics for this portfolio. Additionally, the Director of Major Gifts will cultivate his/her portfolio for contributions to SFMOMA’s expansion.

The Director of Major gifts will work closely with the programmatic staff of the museum (curatorial staff, education and public programs, conservation, and the finance department) to identify and craft programs for support. S/he will work closely with the Director of Institutional Giving to package these opportunities for philanthropic support and define the revenue goals associated with them. S/he will also work closely with the Individual Giving staff to ensure close coordination and effective integration with the annual giving program for individuals. S/he will ensure quarterly meetings with the Curatorial departments to review the upcoming exhibition and program schedule and the tracking of funding prospects and will report regularly on the status of those prospects. Finally, s/he will work very closely with the campaign staff to ensure coordination and integration with the $610 million expansion campaign of SFMOMA.

S/he staffs the Exhibition Support Committee and integrates the programmatic funding process into the activities of the Director’s Circle and Artist’s Circle committees. The Director of Major Gifts manages a Development Associate, who supports the director in the successful accomplish of the programs goals and objectives.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for meeting annual individual restricted and other special project income goals, through the development of a plan for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of major gifts prospects.

Staff and support the Exhibition Support Committee and provide support and integration with the other volunteer fundraising committees.

Staff and support the Quarterly Curatorial Meetings with Development.

Design and implement systems to support donor advancement and increased engagement.

Write targeted solicitation proposals and stewardship reports for individual donors and prospects.

Supervise the work of the Development Associate.

Identify most appropriate person(s) to participate in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals. Engage trustees and key staff in process and when appropriate, participate directly in solicitation meetings.

Continually research, assess and upgrade assigned portfolio.

Maintain accurate and complete records of donor contacts and communications.

Prepare and manage annual major gifts expense and revenue budgets.

Working closely with the donor services group, plan and oversee cultivation and stewardship events and special fundraising events for individual donors.

Job Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: Possession of a Baccalaureate degree. Post graduate study desirable. Experience in museums and knowledge of the arts very desirable.

Work Experience: Minimum 8 years of development experience with increasing responsibility; successful history of individual giving; staff, volunteer, and committee management. Extensive knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques and ethics; experience in devising strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major donors; knowledge of Bay Area philanthropic community helpful. Candidates with experience fundraising in the arts are highly desired.

Skills and Abilities: Must possess exceptional written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking and meeting facilitation. Ability to motivate and interact effectively with Board, volunteers, donors and museum staff at all levels. Possession of a collegial management style that promotes team work, creativity and open communication. Knowledge of modern and contemporary art preferred. Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities with grace and humor. Well organized and detail oriented. Ability to use computer systems required (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Tessitura).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands: Willingness to work flexible hours. Evening and weekend hours will be required on occasion.

Special Environmental Factors: Close office setting.
