The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology at the University of Michigan seeks a full-time Coordinator of K-12 and Community Outreach to support the Museum’s varied educational and conservation activities. The Kelsey Museum is located on the central campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and houses a collection of more than 100,000 ancient and medieval objects from the civilizations of the Mediterranean and the Near Eastern regions. In addition to its permanent display and a variety of special exhibitions, the Museum sponsors research, archaeological fieldwork, and a wide range of visitor programs. It serves as the home of a graduate program, the Interdepartmental Program in Classics and Classical Archaeology, and is closely affiliated with the University’s Museum Studies Program. The primary duties of the Coordinator of K-12 and Community Outreach include:

  • Internal Outreach – Plan and conduct educational tours and special events at the Museum (family days, lectures, workshops, and classes)
  • External Outreach – Plan and conduct educational activities at schools (classroom visits and festivals) and in the community (speakers’ bureau, outreach to civic groups, youth groups)
  • Educational Resources – Develop gallery resources and special hands-on experiences.  Resources include interactive installations in the galleries, traveling kits for classrooms, resources for teacher workshops such as lesson plans and website materials, and educational materials for the Museum gift shop.  Develop and coordinate interpretive media strategies.
  • Docent and Volunteer Coordination – Manage scheduling for tour and outreach opportunities.  Administer and oversee projects for volunteers.
  • University and Community Affiliations – Participate in peer committees within the University and have membership in applicable educational committees in the broader Ann Arbor community.
  • Administration – Assist in documentation of Museum visitation (statistics, program evaluation), and in public relations (distribution of announcement and other resources) in relation to public programs.

The target salary range for this position is $40,000-$50,000.  The actual salary offered may be higher based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Job Requirements

Requirements: A BA is required in a field related to museum studies and/or education.  MA preferred.  Knowledge in Ancient Mediterranean Art and/or Archaeology is preferred.  Two – three years of museum experience and/or K-12 teaching is desired.  Training, program development, public speaking and public relations experience skills are required. The Museum is particularly interested in a person with experience in using interactive technologies and social media in Museum education and K-12 teaching.

This is a full time position.  Flexibility with schedule is required to accommodate evening and weekend events / programs.  Expectation is to maintain professional profile within university organizations and community.
