Tahoe Maritime Museum (TMM) seeks an experienced, creative professional for the position of Curator. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Curator’s principal responsibilities are the care and management of the Museum’s artifact and archival collections. The job also entails researching artifacts and historical themes for the development of exhibits and programs. This position requires the ability to collaborate closely with the other members of the Museum staff and volunteers, and interact effectively with community members and the general public.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collections care and maintenance
  • Exhibition design and development
  • Historical research for presentations and publications
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising  curatorial volunteers
  • Developing and administering the curatorial budget
  • Helping secure funding through grants and other sources
  • Working occasional evenings, weekends, and special events

This position is full-time year-round; salary and benefits commensurate with experience.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate will be well organized and creative, and have experience managing a collection in a Museum. He or she should have knowledge of or the willingness to learn about Lake Tahoe’s regional and maritime history.Tahoe Maritime Museum’s exhibitions and programming revolve around the marine environment and it’s preferred that the Curator have previous on-water experience.

 

The Curator should possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, Public History, or a related program.
  • Knowledge of museum standards and practices, including experience with research, acquisitions, exhibitions, and collaborative programming in a Museum or similar environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, collections management software (PastPerfect preferred), digital photography, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and team oriented skills.
  • Superior written and verbal communication.
  • Diplomacy and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Ability to lift at least 75 lbs.
  • Ability to manage one’s time among multiple projects.
  • Must be willing to take accountability for shared goals and objectives to support the overall Mission of Tahoe Maritime Museum.

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in museum studies, historic preservation, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of North American recreational pleasure boats, engines, and other means of propulsion, and general boating history.
  • Ability to paddle, row, sail, or operate small powerboats.
  • Ability to drive a boat trailer to retrieve and launch boats.
  • Grant writing skills.
