The Hammer Museum, operated by the University of California, Los Angeles, is seeking a Director, Administration to provide strategic leadership in key administrative areas for an organization with an annual budget of over $21 million, approximately 100 FT staff, and approximately 100 PT staff.  As a senior member of the Museum’s management team, the Director, Administration is responsible for institutional strategic and building planning, and for the direction, oversight, and management of staff, operations, and budgets for human resources, technology, security, the retail store, governance, and board relations.  The Director, Administration additionally provides broad oversight and guidance for areas such as compliance, risk management, contract administration, workflow efficiency, emergency preparedness, public safety, frontline coordination, staff engagement, and museum best practices.

The Director, Administration works closely with the operations, finance, and legal staff to ensure that Museum operations and programs conform to relevant museum, nonprofit, and business standards and requirements.  The Director, Administration provides guidance and leadership to the Strategic Management Team, which is comprised of department heads from across the Museum, and strategizes its monthly discussions with executive management, in addition to representing the Museum in communications with University offices including Campus Human Resources, Insurance and Risk Management, and the office of the Dean of the School of Arts and Architecture, as well as with outside professional organizations and cultural institutions both locally and nationally.

The Director, Administration directly supervises the Associate Director, HR; the Associate Director, Technology; the Assistant Director, Security; the Store Operations Manager and Store Buying Manager; and the Administrative Coordinator.  Through these direct reports, the Director, Administration indirectly supervises the HR Manager, the Network and Systems Administrator, the IT Coordinator, the AV Technical Director, 3 FT A/V Supervisors (plus additional PT staff), 4 Security Supervisors, the Security Coordinator, 9 FT Security Officers, and the Retail Coordinator (plus additional PT staff).

Requirements: 5-7 years’ experience working in museum or nonprofit cultural administration, with significant working knowledge of the business, operational, and financial practices of a museum or nonprofit cultural institution; significant understanding of museum ethics, principles, policies, procedures, and best practices according to AAM and AAMD standards; proven ability in staff management, fiscal management, and strategic planning, in both administrative and programmatic areas; demonstrated ability to interpret and navigate multiple complex and overlapping policies, procedures, and agreements; experience working and liaising with an outside Board of Directors, including Board officers and Committee chairs; excellent written communication skills; ability to write reports, policies, procedures, strategic communications, and business and legal correspondence. Advanced degree in business management, museum studies, or comparable area of study; working knowledge of museum retail management practices; working knowledge of museum technology management practices; and working knowledge of museum security practices preferred.
