Reporting to the Supervising Photographer, the Imaging Technician works as a member of the Photographic Services department providing digital capture of 2D and 3D artworks and objects in LACMA’s diverse collections and provides image editing for the department. The Imaging Technician also documents exhibitions, installations and other programming needs.

Some duties include: Accurately documents artworks based on museum standards and objectives;

makes every effort to ensure the safety of the artwork(s) during the capture process;

uses various photo capture and editing software to produce reproduction quality digital files;

applies appropriate targets, values and profiles as part of the capture/editing process;

performs 2D copy work and scanning of various film formats and analog materials;

assigns designated metadata; performs batch processing and prepares files for upload to DAMS;

produces guide prints for publication projects.

Job Requirements

The qualified candidate will have a degree in Photography or related field. Minimum 3 years of experience in a museum photo studio or similar environment. Experience photographing 2D and 3D artworks under a variety or lighting conditions in studio, galleries, exterior, in situ and off-site as needed. Sound knowledge and experience with various digital camera capture systems and software.

Solid foundation of lighting (strobe, tungsten), lighting ratios and setups.  Strong background in color theory and color management. Expert knowledge in image editing, including color and tonal correction, masking and compositing, creating derivatives, prepping digital files for print and electronic output.

Individual must have advanced working knowledge of image editing software including Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, Capture One and proficient with various camera capture and scanning software.
