Indiana University seeks nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Indiana University Art Museum. Reporting to the Provost, the director is responsible for setting the Museum’s direction, expanding financial support for the Museum, and developing new audiences.  The director is responsible for the Museum’s personnel and the financial management of a budget of approximately $4 million. He or she will steward the Museum’s diverse collections and further its exhibitions program. The director must be an enthusiastic fundraiser who is familiar with the fiscal challenges and opportunities facing cultural institutions and higher education. He or she must foster close working relationships with the university administration, faculty across departments and disciplines, and all groups who support and rely upon the Museum.

 

The Museum is located on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University, and is housed in a stunning building designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei. Its mission is to preserve, exhibit, collect, research, publish, and interpret original works of art to advance the academic goals of Indiana University and to enrich the cultural lives and spiritual well-being of society.

 

The successful candidate must have outstanding leadership skills and a minimum of five years of experience in an administrative position at an art museum or comparable institution. He or she must also have an intellectually rigorous approach to planning and executing exhibitions and educational programs, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a proven track record in fundraising. The ability to work effectively with faculty and academic administrators is necessary.  A master’s degree is required.
