The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Considered among the top 10 institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 275,000 visitors a year.  There are more than 140 public education programs and over 80,000 students served annually.  CMNH employs about 160 people.

 

Building on its strong foundation of excellence in education and research, the Museum is poised to transform itself.  CMNH will invite and engage a broader audience in the exploration of science and the natural world by revolutionizing the way it presents natural history.  The Museum has currently launched a capital campaign in the range of $150M to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits.  This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

Summary:  Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Campaign Director provides strategic direction for the capital campaign and manages and executes the plan and campaign budget.  The Campaign Director is expected to function with professional discretion in dealing with a wide variety of Museum constituencies including co-workers, trustees, donors, and government offices. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:(Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

 

Develop all systems, protocols, policies, procedures, metrics and infrastructure to support efficient and effective implementation of the campaign plan and monitor staff and volunteer assignments.

 

Manage daily activities of the campaign; serving as the central information point for all campaign action, including organizing, monitoring and tracking all aspects of the campaign.

 

Manage donor-base tracking system to monitor the progress of each prospect through cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

 

Develop highly valuable relationships with museum staff and key volunteer leaders to enable the effective leadership and management of the campaign in alignment with the museum’s strategic vision.

 

Provide strategic direction and coordinate efforts of volunteers and staff to achieve goals and prospect moves management.

 

Develop and execute highly sophisticated fundraising strategies in alignment with the priorities of the museum to maximize philanthropic results.

 

With the Chief Development Officer, the Executive Director & CEO, and the Campaign Consultant, set the schedules and agendas, and oversee the development of high-level content for regular staff campaign meetings and the Board of Directors’ Campaign Kitchen Cabinet, Campaign and Governance Committees in order to create a disciplined rhythm and integration of campaign meetings, cultivation activities and Board development.

 

Manage the campaign budget in concert with the Chief Development Officer.

 

Ensure that summary data related to campaign progress, prospects and donors is recorded and tracked in electronic and hard copy format and is ready and up to date for distribution to the Board, administration and staff.

 

Provide information on specific prospects and provide other support to trustees and volunteers engaged in campaign cultivation and solicitation.

 

Monitor fundraising progress, set goals, motivate and support staff, and instill collaboration and cohesiveness to ensure success.

 

Work with Museum’s prospect research staff on prospect profiles and database management of prospects and donors.

 

Manage the writing and development of campaign print and electronic collateral materials and coordinate their design and production.

 

 

Education and/or Experience:

 

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study; seven to ten years of experience in donor relations or frontline fundraising with experience working with volunteer leaders; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

High level of experience working with Microsoft office products to include word, excel and PowerPoint.

Strong supervisory and leadership skills.

 

Ability to effectively coordinate and track multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize, work well under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, and meet stringent and overlapping deadlines.

 

Ability to be an outstanding ambassador for the Museum.

 

Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
