The Metropolitan Museum of Art, among the world’s finest museums, seeks an Assistant/Associate Curator to become a full-time member of the curatorial team of the American Wing, with a principal focus on 18th- to early-20th-century American paintings and works on paper. They will be responsible for performing all curatorial duties, including: researching, studying, and publishing works in the collection; recommending acquisitions by gift and purchase; proposing future exhibitions and publications; and maintaining positive and productive relations with colleagues in the museum, academic, and commercial art worlds as well as with Museum trustees and donors. The ideal candidate will be a published scholar well-versed in a broad range of historical American art, passionately interested in objects and their cultural relevance, and deeply committed to the Museum’s mission of internal and external access, collaboration, and engagement.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Contribute to the organization of permanent-collection displays and loan exhibitions through research, label writing, and digital-media initiatives
  • Research and oversee the publication of works in the collection
  • Respond to correspondence relating to the collection, and assist the public and visiting scholars
  • Actively participate in the Museum’s public education and outreach programs
  • Cultivate potential donors, including members of departmental support groups
  • Collaborate with diverse colleagues throughout the Museum
  • Foster and maintain good working relationships with patrons, trustees, and museum colleagues across the country and abroad as well as with the academic community, dealers, and collectors
  • Other related duties

Requirements and Qualifications

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum five years of curatorial experience
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement and broad curatorial interests in American art and culture
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, visual)
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all staff in the American Wing as well as across the Museum

Knowledge and Education:

  • PhD in art history strongly preferred, MA required, with specialization in 18th- to early-20th-century American paintings and works on paper
