The Texas Historical Commission (THC) is the state agency for historic preservation. We save the real places
that tell the real stories of Texas. THC employees consult with citizens and organizations to preserve Texas’
architectural, archeological, and cultural landmarks. The agency is recognized nationally for its preservation

THC is looking for a Deputy Executive Director who will have direct responsibility for the 20 historic properties
currently being administered by the agency and for the approximately 100 staff positions deployed within the
Historic Sites Division. This position reports to the Executive Director and oversees all aspects of the operations
of 20 state historic sites, including their stewardship, restoration, maintenance, interpretation, visitation and
associated revenues. This key leadership position ensures that visitors to the state historic sites have a
memorable and rewarding experience, and that they leave with a greater understanding of Texas history and
their own potential for contributing to the state’s future.

We are looking for a Deputy Executive Director who:
• Can effectively lead and enhance a multidisciplinary staff of museum, cultural resource and historic sites
professionals, support and maintenance personnel in Austin and at field offices across the state, inspiring
them to be creative and innovative in how they approach their jobs.
• Has extensive knowledge of cultural resource management principles in architecture, history, landscape
architecture and museum management.
• Experienced with public agency administrative practices including Human Resources, procurement, and
risk management.
• Degreed accreditation in historic preservation, museum studies, public or business administration or a
closely-related field and a minimum of 5 to 8 years of professional experience in the management of
multiple historic properties, depending upon achieved academic level.
