One of the newest museums in New York City, the Rubin Museum of Art is dedicated to creating a dynamic environment that stimulates learning, promotes understanding, and inspires personal connections to the idea, cultures, and art of the Himalayas, India and neighboring regions. Now in its tenth year, the Rubin Museum welcomes over 175,000 visitors annually and has 4,000 members. The Rubin Museum’s preeminent collection includes works of art from present-day Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Tibetan Plateau. The pace is lively with more than six changing exhibitions and more than 250 films, concerts, and on-stage conversations a year.

Reporting to the Head of Marketing and Communications, the Public Relations and Marketing Manager will play a key role in building and creating more awareness of and engagement in all that happens at the Museum through bold and creative marketing initiatives.

The Museum is working to align its collection, exhibitions, programming and educational and community outreach initiatives in new and dynamic ways, with a focus on engaging visitors and building new audiences in new and exciting ways. The Board and Executive Director have made a commitment to invest new resources in the Museum’s website, social media, paid advertising on-line and public relations/promotional and new media initiatives.

The Museum is recruiting for a Public Relations & Marketing Manager who will play a key role in building and creating more awareness of and engagement in all that happens at the Museum through bold and creative marketing and programming initiatives. The Museum is looking for someone with a positive attitude, an entrepreneurial spirit, combined with strong project management, organizational and communication skills.

This position reports to the Head of Marketing and Communications and will work closely within the Director of External Affairs and the entire External Affairs Team, as well as every division of the Museum – the Curatorial and Programming staff, the Education and Visitor Experience team, Special Events/Rentals, the Shop and Café Serai. The Public Relations and Marketing Manager is a “gatekeeper” of information, up-to-date with all that happens – and will happen – at the Museum.

Responsibilities:

Public Relations and Media:

Working closely with the Head of Marketing and Communications and consultant advisors/agencies, serves as the key staff member in charge of press releases, media outreach and on-site press/media visits and photo/video shoots.

Maintains and updates the Rubin’s media list and relationships with key journalists.

Monitors and shares Rubin press coverage, as well as maintains the media coverage archive.

Monitors and shares trends happening in the arts, new media and pop culture space to help inform Rubin Museum of Art Marketing & Communications strategy.

Plays a key role in coordinating media/press briefings.

Communications and Marketing:

Working closely with the Head of Marketing and Communications, plays a leadership role in engaging key staff throughout the Museum in achieving their goals for building visibility and engagement with audiences for exhibitions and the art, films/talks/concerts and special events, education/access initiatives and the Shop, Café and special events and rentals. Helps design and implement new marketing initiatives, partnerships, and other initiatives to achieve this goal.

Provides counsel and recommendations for marketing exhibitions, including exhibition titles, key image choices, communications language, interactive design, etc.

Produces the editorial focus of the quarterly calendar for the Museum, as well as copy writing, production coordination, copy editing, and close collaboration with the design and editorial teams.

Coordinates the production of annual reports for the Museum, both on-line and printed versions.

Working closely with the Head of Marketing and Communications, plays a key role in writing and editing copy for all Museum marketing materials, including brochures, flyers and invitations, whether printed or electronic – ensuring that the brand strategy and identity of the Rubin are consistent, and that the voice of the Museum is as well.

Serves as point person for all internal printed and digital ephemera requests; reviews and edits proposed copy and graphics; serves as liaison between Museum client, graphics, and editorial.

Coordinates the hiring and managing of photographers for public programs and special events.

Provides counsel and on-site support for Museum events including those related to strategic partnerships, Education, Membership, etc.

Responsible for managing the bids, contracts, payments and overall budget management for all communications projects.

Advertising and Marketing:

Serves as the point person for project management with our outside consultants on development of Institution-wide media plan as well as design, production and placement of advertising buys (print, broadcast, online), working closely with other members of the Marketing/Communications Team, including the Graphic Design Team for the creation of ads.

Keeps an online record of all ads and marketing plans/strategy documents.

Strategic Partnerships and Engagement:

In charge of keeping the Museum’s 500 + key contacts/VIPS list up to date, and coordinating with the Director of External Affairs communications to this group three to four times a year, providing counsel and ideas on how to keep this audience segment engaged and energized.

Working closely with the Director of External Affairs and Head of Marketing and Communications, plays a key role in outreach and engagement of strategic organizational relationships and potential partnerships and collaboration.

Maintains and continues existing promotions on the Museum’s calendar in coordination with the Manager of Visitor Experience, and takes the initiative to design new promotional campaigns that increase the number of visitors to the Museum.

Serves as the point person at the Rubin for key initiatives, such as Asia Week and CelebrASIA.

Develops and maintains relationships with NYC and Co. as well as other groups key to helping the 50 million tourists who visit New York City each year and are interested in culture and arts, with the goal of having more people visit the Rubin Museum.

Represents the Rubin Museum at key community, neighborhood and NYC government events, or coordinates the participation of other Museum leaders.

All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Proven track record as a key member of a marketing/communications team with a minimum of five years’ experience, preferably in an arts or cultural non-profit.

A creative, strategic and entrepreneurial style, combined with a strong project and budget management skills. Enjoys taking initiative and leadership.

Evidence of having created a balance between collaboration and team work with results and excellent project management skills. This position will be working across virtually every department in the Museum, and must have great people skills.

Ability to manage junior staff member(s) as needed, including Interns.

Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, and able to juggle competing priorities and projects with grace and a sense of humor.

Exceptionally strong communicator with excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

Experience with the cultural sector and non-profit arts organizations, preferred.

Interest in the art and culture of the Himalayas, India and neighboring regions preferred.

Bachelor’s degree required.
