Director of Communications and Marketing, Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute (MWPAI)

Job Summary: MWPAI is seeking a Director to lead an organization-wide initiative to evaluate, test, establish and maintain systems to develop, improve and measure marketing and communications efforts that promote MWPAI and its wide range of arts programming. The Director will develop and implement innovative approaches to enhance the visibility and appreciation of MWPAI, both by deepening relationships with current audiences and by engaging new audiences. Working collaboratively with each division head, the Director will strive to tailor initiatives for maximum effectiveness for each division and leverage cross-division opportunities while maintaining a unified brand for the Institute. Together with these division heads, the Director will focus on maximizing earned and contributed revenues while engaging growing audiences across all programs.

The Director reports to the President and manages a team of five responsible for producing and measuring the marketing initiatives necessary for the success of the Museum of Art, School of Art, Performing Arts, and Development Office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all branding and messaging initiatives to communicate MWPAI’s mission and core values.
  • Responsible for strategy, planning, and implementation of MWPAI marketing campaigns, public relations, internal and external communications.
  • Review and measure efficiency of current messaging, systems, and practices.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive survey to establish a baseline of present attitudes toward MWPAI, the results of which will be used to shape program and communications decisions.
  • Research, develop, implement and evaluate new approaches to identify and reach new audiences.
  • Oversee all advertising, publications, website, social media and grassroots marketing.
  • Ensure accuracy, brand integrity, and timeliness of all communications initiatives, online and in print.
  • Assist in the selection, integration and management of a new CRM system.
  • As a senior staff member, provide input on setting MWPAI policies, participate in long range planning, budgeting, and serve on Board committees.
  • Oversee day-to-day department operations including budgeting, staffing and supervision.

 Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Proven leadership in a marketing / communications office at a mission driven organization
  • Proven ability to position communications, both strategically and tactically, in support of an organization’s mission and goals
  • Demonstrated experience making data driven marketing decisions, as well as proactively developing and using analytic tools to test audiences, messages, tactics and outcomes
  • Hands-on experience and proficiency using the following to engage audiences:

–       a sophisticated CRM system

–       web-based marketing tools

–       social media and email marketing

–       podcasts and videos

–       current software tools used for team management and design / production

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high level of proficiency in spoken and written communications

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, liberal arts, or other related field. An advanced degree is desirable.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a management role including marketing, public relations, and communications. Experience with an arts-related institution is desirable.

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute is an internationally prominent fine arts center serving diverse audiences through three program divisions – Museum of Art, Performing Arts and School of Art. The Institute was founded in 1919 and provides some 600 events with annual attendance of more than 150,000.

The Museum of Art features renowned permanent collections, fascinating exhibitions and education for all ages in an international-style gallery building designed by world famous architect Philip Johnson and also in Fountain Elms, a superb Victorian-era Italianate mansion.

The Performing Arts Division presents world famous soloists and ensembles, rising stars, recitals with commentary, cinema, family programs, outdoor festival concerts, special events, and educational activities.

The School of Art offers a nationally accredited college program (PrattMWP) in association with Pratt Institute and community arts education for approximately 1500 students of all ages enjoying non-credit classes in painting, drawing, pottery, jewelry, and more. PrattMWP college enrollment is approximately 200 students majoring in fine arts, communications design, photography and art and design education. Students spend the first two years of their bachelor of fine arts degree at our campus in Central New York before they complete their studies at Pratt’s main campus in Brooklyn.
