Hammond-Harwood House Profile

The Hammond-Harwood House, built in 1774, is a National Historic Landmark. It represents the final and finest work of renowned architect William Buckland. This five-part Anglo-Palladian historic house museum contains some of the best woodcarving and decorative plasterwork in the United States. The museum showcases a superb collection of decorative and fine arts and furniture from colonial artisans including the works of Annapolis cabinetmaker John Shaw. The museum displays an excellent collection of paintings by American colonial artists such as Charles Willson Peale, John Hesselius, Jeremiah Theus, and John Trumbull.  The house’s period rooms feature exquisite silver, china, and furnishings of the 18th and early 19th century.

The mission of the Hammond-Harwood House Association, Incorporated is to preserve, for public education and enjoyment, the architecturally significant Hammond-Harwood House museum and its collection of fine and decorative arts.

Position Description

 

Position Title: Executive Director

Reports to: The President of the Hammond-Harwood House Association

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Executive Director is responsible to the Board of Trustees for ensuring the optimum efficiency and effectiveness of the Hammond-Harwood House, a National Historic Landmark in Annapolis, Maryland.  The Executive Director provides leadership and general supervision for the overall management of museum staff and programs.  The Executive Director coordinates activities of the staff and the Board of Trustees. The Executive Director manages a staff of 2 full time employees, approximately 24 part-time docents, and dozens of volunteers.

The Executive Director performs a leadership role in fundraising and writing and securing grants to sustain a $300,000 operating budget and an annual capital budget of up to $300,000. Further, the Executive Director provides guidance and participates in the organization and execution of a minimum of four fundraising events per year.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful applicant for this position must have:

  • Advanced Degree preferred in relevant field with a strong emphasis on marketing, development and      fundraising,
  • Five years of successful non-profit management or business administration experience, preferably at a museum or historic site, with a strong emphasis on marketing, development and fundraising
  • Passionate interest in history, the decorative arts, historic sites and museums and their promotion,
  • Proven experience and excellence in:
    • Leadership, development, marketing and fundraising skills,
    • Organization skills and project management,
    • Training and mentoring staff, docents and volunteers
    • Developing and managing an operating budget and a capital budget,
    • Applying an action oriented, adaptable and innovative approach to business planning and       execution to meet strategic objectives,
    • Developing and executing quality programs using performance measurement and evaluation,
    • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including public presentations,
    • Inspiring and motivating people individually and in groups,
    • Working with a Board of Trustees including cultivating and improving Board member       relationships and involvement,
    • Working effectively in collaboration with a diverse and wide range of stakeholders, people       and cultures,
  • Demonstrated:
    • Commitment to public engagement in a community or region to promote history, the decorative arts, historic architecture, sites and museums, and historic preservation,
    • Experience with historic site and museum marketing and promotions
    • Competence in internet-based social media and fundraising, and Microsoft Office programs
