The Art Museum of West Virginia University is seeking a Museum Educator. This position will be responsible for coordinating major educational initiatives, establishing short- and long-term goals and objectives, working with university faculty, K-12 teachers and students; facilitating community partnerships; developing and implementing interpretive programs and resources for exhibitions to make the art collection accessible to the broadest possible audience, and serving as an integral member of the leadership team. The Art Museum will open its newly completed building on campus in August 2015.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

Exhibitions, Special Events and Public Programs
Develops, implements, and evaluates exhibiton interactives, programs and materials that expand exhibition themes, engage target audiences and ensure high quality visitor learning experiences
Works with museum staff to organize Art Up Close! program series and develop additional interpretive programs for outreach to the public
Coordinates visits by outside speakers for academic lectures and panels
Oversees the selection, planning, organization, and implementation of a wide variety of offerings for families with children, including programs, performances, and in-gallery experiences
Plans programs to expand the Museum’s audience and works with public relations to develop program promotion
Community Outreach and Evaluation
Serves on museum education advisory groups to foster communication between the museum and teachers
Conducts audience research and evaluates program effectiveness
Acts as liaison between museum staff and schools, community groups and other local organizations
Volunteer and Internship Coordination
Oversees museum education internships
Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates the museum’s volunteer docents
Works with museum staff to train students and docents to engage visitors and communicate information about exhibitions and the museum
University Liaison
Develops and implements educational programs for university students in the School of Art & Design and across campus, facilitates the collection as a teaching tool and exhibit galleries as a learning environment.
Builds working relationships with WVU faculty in various schools and colleges to encourage and facilitate use of the museum collection, programs and exhibitions for research purposes, public programs, and in cross-disciplinary courses.
Engages faculty and students in art as visual literacy, conceptual and creative approaches and its cultural and historical contexts. Collaborates with faculty in developing first-hand involvement with the collections across disciplines.
Provides timely information about the museum’s education programs to appropriate departments of the university and to the general public, using existing resources of the museum and the college.
Develops exhibit previews for the university faculty that promote museum resources.
Helps to create a gracious welcome for all museum visitors.
K-12 Educational Programs
Develops resource and interpretive materials designed for teachers to ensure integration of state standards in all K-12 programs; Organizes workshops for teachers.
Produces educational resources or study packets.
Organizes school visits and serves as liaison between museum staff and schools.
Leadership and Professional Service
Maintains a visible presence in the local, state, and national professional community by presenting information about the museum’s education programs and establishing communication and exchange with other museums implementing exemplary programs
Maintains and increases professional standing through staying current with recent research and writing, and by collaborating and networking with other museum educators
Maintains professional conduct at all times with Museum staff and the public
Serves on the exhibition team, various museum and college committees as appropriate
Helps target grants, private funding, and non-traditional programming support, and write fundraising narratives as needed
Prepares monthly and annual reports detailing activities for granting agencies, donor stewardship, and university administration
Outgoing, friendly, team player, must be detail-oriented while handling multiple projects and deadlines
Job Requirements
Education: Master’s degree required; Ph.D. or Education Doctorate preferred in art education, education, art history, museum studies or closely related field

Experience: Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in a museum setting, art education or closely related field and a minimum of 3 years of planning and implementation of art-based programs and lesson plans.

Ability to work flexible hours and day, some evenings and/or weekends
Understanding of social media and its use in promoting greater access to museum collections
Must be energetic, flexible, resourceful, and with an entrepreneurial attitude to create and present exciting programs for a broad audience

Ability to climb stairs, carry or lift 30 pounds, and stand or sit for extended periods of time
Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel
