The Cleveland Museum of Art’s curatorial publications department seeks candidates for an Editor who is responsible for exhibition and permanent collection didactics, interpretive graphics, gallery cards, brochures, flyers, rack cards, signage, etc., and for editing exhibition catalogues and exhibition booklets. Through reading, editing, proofreading, and copyediting, the editor ensures clear, precise, and “visitor-centered” language in proper grammatical and stylistic form. The editor works closely with internal and external authors to carry out substantive revisions and also to ensure that publication production schedules are maintained. The editor also works closely with both internal and external graphic and publications designers. Collaborating with the Education and Interpretation, Exhibition, Collections Management, Design and Architecture, and Exhibition Production departments, the editor helps ensure the proper formatting and timely installation of labels, panels, and signage. The editor works closely with designers to prepare, maintain, distribute, and monitor the annual label schedule. In addition, the editor reviews website texts and printed materials related to exhibitions and permanent collection installations and performs library research as needed. The editor collaborates with other Curatorial Publications staff on publication projects to be assigned, including exhibition catalogues and booklets, Focus Gallery publications and collections catalogues, and miscellaneous ephemera.

Job Requirements
Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in English with additional coursework in art history required; minimum five years of editorial experience, preferably in a museum or related institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree in English is preferred. Have the ability to respond effectively to job-related inquiries or requests, write and edit articles, define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with abstract and concrete variables. Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and research skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines and focus on several different projects simultaneously if necessary. Professional proficiency in editing required. Must be PC proficient and have knowledge of MS Word and the Chicago Manual of Style. Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Illustrator desirable. Quark Xpress desirable. Ability to adjust to an often-changing production schedule and handle last-minute projects with poise and efficiency.
