Located on one of the most beautiful sites in the world at Sydney’s Circular Quay, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia opened to the public in 1991, reopening in 2012 following a major expansion. Focusing on the work of living artists, MCA’s vision is to engage diverse audiences with contemporary art and ideas through the presentation of a wide ranging program of exhibitions and special events.

Reporting to the Director/CEO, the Director – Audience Engagement is a key member of MCA’s senior leadership team who work together to develop MCA strategy and shape the museum’s future.  This role also leads a team whose focus is on audience development across a range of disciplines. Combining relationship management with program development, the role demands both a strategic and a creative approach.  The position holder will develop the strategy for audience development and lead a portfolio of programs intended to sustain, engage and develop audiences, and generate revenue across creative learning, visitor experience and marketing and communications.

We are looking for an individual with the vision and energy to help shape some new directions for MCA; equally, we want someone with the leadership capability to inspire and motivate a committed and passionate team. The post-holder will be an experienced arts professional with a specialism in audience development and/or creative learning. He or she will have outstanding written and verbal communication skills and an ability to write compelling proposals and interpretative material that connects art with audiences, as well as represent the MCA in public forums.  Finally, he or she should demonstrate strong commitment to engaging diverse audiences with contemporary art; programming flair; and experience in developing program strategies.
