The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History seeks a hands-on, highly engaged, collaborative, high-energy person to direct the entire fundraising program and ensure growth and vitality of all forms of contributed support to this unique, one-of-a-kind museum. The Director of Development directs all fundraising initiatives for the National Atomic Museum Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History. The Director of Development is directly responsible for major gifts, planned giving, grant writing and sponsorship development, corporate fundraising, and oversees the membership program, annual fundraising event and annual appeal. Position collaborates with the Museum Director, Trustees and senior staff in the marketing, education, exhibitions departments to meet goals for operation.

The Director of Development creates in conjunction with the Board and senior staff, the Museum’s annual and longer-term development plan and program and is responsible for its successful implementation. Position identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards donors and potential donors to foster growth in major gifts and planned giving; creates grant proposals; solicits corporate sponsorships; oversees the annual appeal; oversees the membership program; and seeks in-kind support. Position is also responsible for the Einstein Society Gala, an upper level membership and cultivation event held each spring attended by up to 400 supporters. Director of Development will assist the Museum Director in collaborating with, assisting, mentoring, inspiring and supporting Board Members in their fundraising effort. Position supervises two staff members, one full-time membership associate and one volunteer administrative assistant. Some travel for corporate cultivation is required. Position is full-time exempt and serves on the museum’s management team with 5 others.

Job Requirements

Five or more years of nonprofit fundraising experience; excellent writing and speaking skills; strong interpersonal skills; and a high level of personal energy are important to the success of this person. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university required; advanced degree a plus. Should be very comfortable with making sponsorship calls to individuals, small businesses and major corporations involved in nuclear energy, medicine and other technical and education support fields. Should be skilled at proposal development, gift cultivation and have an understanding of planned giving programs. Must be exceptionally organized, able to multi-task, and comfortable working in a fast-paced museum environment with multiple concurrent projects. Experience with fundraising events is preferred and capacity in the use of social media platforms is expected. The Director of Development will be comfortable with data use, and database fundraising tracking software. Knowledge of “Matchmaker” constituency management computer software system is a plus.
