Barre Collection Interns- Job Description

The Project:

The Vermont Historical Society will be hiring two interns for twelve weeks during the summer

of 2015. The interns will work as a team inventorying and cataloging the Barre History

Collection. The collections are currently housed at the Vermont History Center in Barre. The

collections were recently acquired from the Aldrich Public Library and represent the holdings of

the former Barre Historical Society. The collections will be inventoried and cataloged and then

prepared for integration into the storage areas of the VHS at the Vermont History Center in

Barre. Primarily interns will be working with written records from the former Barre Historical

Society and transferring that information into the VHS collections database (PastPerfect). Duties

will include cleaning and moving artifacts, photography, researching and writing for the catalog.

Interns will report to the curator but will also work with the registrar.

VHS has a small staff so interns will be exposed to many different aspects of the workings of a

state historical society. They will be required on occasion to help with larger institution wide

projects and events.

Salary: $10 an hour for a maximum of 480 hours.

Job Qualifications:

College graduate with BS / BA in history/museum/archives/conservation program or currently in

a graduate program in one of these areas.

At least one year of experience in a museum or archives working with collections.

A demonstrated understanding of collections care, collections management and current

conservation standards and practices for museums

Excellent computer skills including ability to input information into a database and manipulate

that information.

Experience using PastPerfect software a plus.

A valid driver’s license, and working, reliable means of transportation.

Ability to carry a minimum of 25 pounds up and down stairs.

Work setting and schedule:

The project will take place at the Vermont Historical Society’s Vermont History Center, in

Barre, Vermont.

Internship is for a 12 week period between mid May and mid August 2013.

Work week will be Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. though weekend and evening

work will occasionally be required.
