Boston Emerging Museum Professionals Event!

Please join the Boston Emerging Museum Professionals and the NEMA YEPs for a group tour of the NEW Art of the Americas wing at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  The new wing has 53 new galleries and is the centerpiece of the museum’s recent expansion. The tour will be 1 hour long. After the tour, we can grab a bite to eat at the New American Café, Galleria or Garden Cafés (optional).

When: Sunday, January 23  at 11:00 am (please arrive 15-20 minutes early so that we can start on time)

Manager of Family Programs [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston]

Under the direction of the Head of Gallery Learning, this position develops, coordinates and facilitates gallery learning experiences for families with young children. In this role he/she designs and implements family learning activities for specific museum wide events such as School Vacation Weeks and MFA Playdates as well as family events coordinated by other departments, including Membership and Volunteer and Community Programs. This position also oversees ongoing drop-in gallery activities for families such as the Family Art Cart. Train and supervise adjunct staff, volunteers, work-study students and interns as teachers and program facilitators. Schedule staff for events and programs. Work with the Head of Gallery Learning in writing and developing interactive materials and self-guided gallery activities for families. Work with departments across the museum, including PR, Marketing, and Creative Services in the development of family programs. With the Head of Gallery Learning, assist in continuing to shape family experiences at the MFA for this dynamic and expanding visitor demographic to the museum.

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s preferred. 2-3 years experience in a museum setting desirable.
Background in studio art or art education preferred. Excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills; Creative thinker and problem solver with strong people skills; Attention to detail and strong organization skills a must.

Manager of School Programs [Museum of Fine Art, Boston]

MANAGER OF SCHOOL PROGRAMS

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

Under the direction of the Head of School Programs and Teacher
Resources, responsible for overseeing the administration, operations,
and quality of the MFA’s School Programs and the Gallery Instructor
Program. Works as an integral part of the School Programs team to
deliver high quality museum learning experiences for teachers and
students of grades 2 – 12, and the MFA’s large and diverse corps of
volunteers, the Gallery Instructors.

The Manager of School Programs oversees the development of high quality
content for, delivery, and evaluation of the MFA’s large and diverse
array of programs for school group visitors. This includes: revision of
tour program content as necessary to ensure relevance to K – 12 school
curriculum frameworks and learning standards; training of the Gallery
Instructors on tour content; evaluation of program implementation; and
overseeing all operations and administration of School Programs,
including management of website content. In addition, the Manager
supervises a part-time Coordinator, numerous interns, and the MFA’s
large corps of volunteer Gallery Instructors (GIs). The Manager of
School Programs provides an overall vision for stewardship of the GI
Program, and oversees all activities directly pertaining to the GIs.
This includes recruiting, training, evaluation, on-going professional
development, collaborative work with the GI Advisory Board and numerous
committees, and collaboratively developing and carrying out the GI
Program Strategic Plan. The successful running of the GI Program depends
on smooth and efficient communications. The Manager of School Programs
is responsible for communications within the GI Program as well as
between the GI Program and other departments around the Museum.

The successful candidate will have a master’s degree Museum Studies,
Education, Art History or Art Education and 5 – 7 years’ experience
working within a museum setting. S/he will have demonstrated experience
working with volunteers, excellent teaching and presentation skills,
organizational and communication skills, and the ability to manage
multiple and complex projects. Prior training and experience with Visual
Thinking Strategies is preferred.

A large portion of the
job is the management of the volunteer docent program (Gallery
Instructors, who lead our school group tours), so candidates with
demonstrated experience with volunteers will be the strongest.

Manager of Teacher Programs and Partnerships [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston]

Manager of Teacher Programs and School Partnerships
Education

Under the direction of the Head of School Programs and Teacher Resources, the Manager of Teacher Programs and School Partnerships will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing the MFA¹s existing partnerships with individual schools and school districts, and cultivating new ones. S/he will be responsible for helping to develop an ongoing program of professional development workshops and resource materials for K­12 teachers, and overseeing their implementation. This individual will work as an integral part of the School Programs team, to deliver high quality museum learning experiences for our audiences of students (grades 2­12), teachers, and MFA Gallery Instructors.

Master¹s degree in Museum Studies, Education, Art History or Art Education required, along with a minimum of five to seven years of related experience. Additional requirements include: excellent teaching, presentation and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple and complex projects while maintaining high standards and degree of accuracy; a demonstrated track record of successfully cultivating relationships and collaborating with partner organizations; the ability to navigate through complex public schools systems;
experience supervising and motivating staff and volunteers; superb customer service and follow-through skills; previous training in Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) preferred; experience with online teaching and learning tools and managing budgets, a plus. Must be creative and strategic in developing high quality learning programs for students,
teachers and museum educators.
