Working on Bodin in Perseids

Project Details.

Prerequisites: You must use either Firefox (preferred) or Chrome to work with Perseids.  Safari and Internet Explorer are not supported at this time.

A. To add the Latin transcription to your workspace
B. To add the French transcription to your workspace
C. To add the English translation to the Latin or French publication in your workspace
D. To select an individual chapter of a transcription or translation
E. To create translation alignment links between the Latin text and the English text
F. To create translation alignment links between the French text and the English text
G. To view or amend an existing translation alignment annotation
H. To create a text/quotation reuse alignment between the Latin or French text and a primary source text

A. To add the Latin transcription to your workspace:

  1. In the dropboxes under “Select a publication to work with”, select the following (in order)
    1. pilots, Bodin, Les Six Livres de la République, perseus-lat1
  2. click Emend
  3. the Latin XML file is now added to your workspace

B. To add the French transcription to your workspace:

  1. In the dropboxes under “Select a publication to work with”, select the following (in order)
    1. pilots, Bodin, Les Six Livres de la République, perseus-fre1
  2. click Emend
  3. the French XML file is now added to your workspace

C. To add the English translation to the Latin or French publication in your workspace

  1. In Perseids, access the overview screen for the publication  by clicking on the link for the Publication column of the home page
  2. Under the transcription or translation heading, click Add Translation
  3. On the screen, click the Emend button next to the select box with perseus-eng1

D. To select an individual chapter of a  transcription or translation

  1. In Perseids, access the overview screen for the publication  by clicking on the link for the Publication column of the home page
  2. Under the transcription or translation heading, click Select Passage
  3. Enter the Book and Chapter number and click Retrieve
  4. If you want to edit the XML, click Edit
  5. If you want to annotate the XML, click Annotate

E. To create translation alignment links between the Latin text and the English text:

  1. Add the Latin text to your workspace (per A above)
  2. Add the English translation to your Latin publication (per C above)
  3. Select the target chapter of the Latin text and choose Annotate (per D above)
    1. Note: if you have already created annotations for the selected chapter, then you will be prompted to either Review or Append. To create a new annotation for that chapter, click Append.
  4. After the tokenized version of the Latin text loads in the left side of the screen, click on the “Click to show/hide available textual sources” link on the right side
  5. In the left-most dropdown, select “This Publication”
  6. The remainder of the dropdowns should be automatically populated with the textgroup, work and edition of the English Bodin translation (“pdlpsci:bodin”, “livrep”, “the six books of a common-weale”)
  7. Enter the Book and Chapter from the English which you want to align with the Latin and click “Request Resource”. The English tokenized text will load.
  8. Highlight the Latin subtext to be aligned by clicking and dragging the mouse over the text. When you release the mouse, the text should remain highlighted and the rightmost part of the URI for Target in the input area above the text should be automatically updated with the coordinates of the text you selected (e.g. …@Respvblica[1]-aliud[1]).
  9. Highlight the English text that corresponds to the Latin by repeating the above procedure on the right side of the screen with the English text.
    1. You may select more than one section of target Latin text to align,by using the “Add” button below the Latin target annotation URI box, but for the moment the interface only allows you to select one section of the English.
  10. Make sure “Has Translation” is selected in the dropdown below the Latin Text
  11. Click Save
  12. You will see a preview of your alignment annotation. You can re-edit this by clicking on the Edit tab. Or you can select New Target to create a new annotation.

F. To create translation alignment links between the French text and the English text:

  1. Add the French text to your workspace (per B above)
  2. Follow steps 2-12 under E above, creating an alignment annotation link between the Latin and English text, substituting the French text for the Latin in the instructions.

G. To view or amend an existing translation alignment annotation

  1. In Perseids, access the overview screen for the publication  by clicking on the link for the Publication column of the home page
  2. Under the section entitied “Text Annotations – Identifier pilots/pdlpsci/bodin.livrep/edition/perseus-[lat|fre]1/annotations” click Preview
  3. Click on the link of an annotation you want to edit (e.g. the individual annotation links look like http://data.perseids.org/perseids/annotations/…….)
  4. You should see a preview of the annotation with the target and body links, etc.
  5. Click the Edit tab.
  6. The edit screen should load, with the previously selected Latin text higlighted. To see the corresponding English text, click the “Click to show/hide available textual sources link” and then click “Request Resource”. The English text should load with the previously selected English text higlighted.
  7. You can make changes to the selections at this point and click Save to save your changes.

H. To create a text/quotation reuse alignment between the Latin or French text and a primary source text (e.g. Aristotle)

  1. Follow steps 1-3 under E or F, creating a translation alignment
  2. After the Latin/French text loads, click on the “Click to show/hide available textual sources” link on the right side
  3. Select “Quotation Sources” from the left-most dropdown.
  4. Select “Aristotle” or “Plato” from the next drop-down
  5. Select the work
  6. Select either the Greek or the English edition (perseus-grc1 or perseus-eng1)
  7. For Aristotle: Enter the Bekker page that contains the quoted text in “From” box. For Plato: Enter the Book # and Stephanus section
  8. NB: only 1 single Bekker page or Stephanus section can be entered at this time. Ranges are not yet supported. Leave the “To” box empty
  9. Click Request Resources. The corresponding Greek or English passage from the Aristotle text should load. (If an error occurs, make sure you have entered a valid Bekker page)
  10. Highlight the Latin subtext that quotes the Aristotle text by clicking and dragging the mouse over the text. When you release the mouse, the text should remain highlighted and the rightmost part of the URI for Target in the input area above the text should be automatically updated with the coordinates of the text you selected (e.g. …@Respvblica[1]-aliud[1]).
  11. Highlight the Greek/English text from Aristotle that corresponds to the Latin by repeating the above procedure on the right side of the screen with the English text.
  12. Choose “Has Link” from the dropdown below the Latin Text
  13. Click Save

I. To create a link between the Latin or French text and an external authority (e.g. a Pleiades Place, a Wikipedia entry, etc.)

  1. Follow steps 1-3 under E or F, creating a translation alignment
  2. After the Latin/French text loads, click on the “Click to show/hide available textual sources” link on the right side
  3. Highlight
    the Latin subtext by clicking and
    dragging the mouse over the text. When you release the mouse, the text
    should remain highlighted and the rightmost part of the URI for Target
    in the input area above the text should be automatically updated with
    the coordinates of the text you selected (e.g.
    …@Respvblica[1]-aliud[1]).
  4. Enter the URI of the external reference in the URI for Resource box
  5. Choose the appropriate item from the dropdown below the Latin Text (e.g. “Has Identity”, “Has Link”, etc.
  6. Click Save

J. To download the entire XML file to work on in oXygen

  1. In Perseids, on the overview screen for the publication, (which you can access by clicking on the link for the Publication column of the home page) click the Download Copy link at the bottom of the page
  2. This downloads a zip file to your local workstation that contains the XML of the text and a text inventory.

K . To upload a local version of the entire XML file to Perseids:

  1. Open the file in oXygen, and Edit, Select All, Edit Copy
  2. In Perseids, click on the link in the Epidoc Transcription column from the home page, or on the XML link under the transcription.
  3. Delete all the text from the text area
  4. Copy the text from your clipboard
  5. Enter a description for your changes in the Edit Summary box.
  6. Click Save

L. To map transcription text for a word or words to manuscript image

  1. Select the target chapter of the Latin text and choose Edit (per D above)
  2. Click on a page image
  3. Follow the instructions in the scrollbox to navigate the image and select a region of interest.
  4. What to copy to the transcription will depend upon what you are highlighting. By default, the transcription tool will create a <w> tag with the coordinates of the selected region of interest supplied in the @facs attribute of the <w> tag. This represents mapping a single word to the coordinates of the word on the page. You can copy this into your transcription (replacing or augmenting whatever existing markup is there for the word), or you can copy the @facs attribute to a different markup tag as appropriate.

M. To create a free-form commentary on a chapter or subreference in a chapter.

  1. Follow steps 1-3 under E or F, creating a translation alignment
  2. If the commentary is to be on a subreference from within the chapter, Highlight the Latin subreference text that is the subject of the commentary by clicking and dragging the mouse over the text. When you release the mouse, the text should remain highlighted and the rightmost part of the URI for Target in the input area above the text should be automatically updated with the coordinates of the text you selected (e.g. …@Respvblica[1]-aliud[1]).
  3. click on the “Click to create a Commentary on annotation target link on the right side
  4. Enter your commentary text, using the toolbar buttons to format as appropriate.
  5. Enter a comment describing your work and click Save.

L. To submit your work for review

NB: Once you submit work on a publication, you will not be able to further edit any of the texts or annotations in that publication until it is either returned to you for revision, accepted by the board and committed, or you withdraw it from review.

  1. In Perseids, access the overview screen for the publication by clicking on the link for the Publication column of the home page
  2. Enter a summary of your work and notes for review
  3. Select “bodin (Bodin Community)” from the drop-down next to the Submit button
  4. Click Submit
