Winnie is a post-doctoral fellow in the Poincaré Institute for Mathematics Education in Tufts University’s Department of Mathematics. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and both her M.S. and B.S. degrees are in mathematics. She has experience teaching mathematics at the middle school, high school, and undergraduate levels, which has enabled her to develop effective teaching practices for students from different backgrounds and abilities—with the goal of providing equal opportunity and support to all students.
Her primary research focuses on the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts and practices in both K-12 and university settings, particularly as they relate to mathematical reasoning, generalization, justification, and proof. Her other research interests include the development of pre- and in-service teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching through the use of technology as well as video representations of teaching. A primary goal of her research is to understand students’ and teachers’ mathematical thinking and reasoning to guide the design of courses and the development of instructional approaches aimed at facilitating students’ learning of mathematics.
