Project Alphabetisation de Base par Cellulaire (ABC) is a mobile phone-based literacy and numeracy program in Niger, a landlocked country located in Sub-Saharan Africa.
What is Project ABC?
Project ABC is a collaborative initiative between Catholic Relief Services/Niger, Tufts University and the University of Oxford that uses mobile phones as a tool to promote adult literacy and numeracy in Niger. Implemented in over 110 villages in the Dosso and Zinder regions of Niger, the program includes a mobile phone module as a complement traditional literacy classes, thereby providing households with the opportunity to practice their literacy and numeracy skills via calling and SMS. This addresses an important constraint to previous functional literacy programs in Niger, where it has been difficult for adult learners to practice what they have learned by accessing timely, up-to-date, and relevant information in their local languages.
