The Microtransat Challenge is an international competition dedicated to the development of autonomous sailboats. The first competition started in 2006 and in 2010, Aberystwyth University and team ENSIETA competed in the first transatlantic race. Ever since, only a handful of teams have actually attempted the challenge.
Sailing across the Atlantic has never been a trivial matter, and programming a robot to do it will be difficult. We are trying to do something really ambitious and something only a handful of people have tried. But we believe it’s possible.
Currently we are talking small steps to increase our skill and knowledge with autonomous sailboats. We are going to compete in the Sailbot 2013 competition in June. After Sailbot, we will take the lessons we have learned to design a boat to cross the Atlantic. Then, during the 2013-2014 school year. we will build and attempt a transatlantic voyage.
