New Media Consortium Summer Conference
June 13, 2012 by Sheryl Barnes
Had an interesting morning volunteering at the registration desk & a lovely lunch, plus a visit to the 16th floor for posters, inter actives, art exhibits & an amazing view of the Charles river.
In my first session now, Mediathread from the folks at Columbia’s Center for New Media Teaching and Learning. Pretty cool tool. Libraries of content (databases, public sites, etc) plus tools for annotating/analyzing them & user-generated content. Fun to explore it in the session.
The Mediathread team is looking for others with interest & has tried to help others get it installed & integrated with authentication systems.
Apple session on challenge based learning. Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT), v2.
6 design principles:

Inspiring movie, “Blindsight”.
Framework components: starts with a big idea (eg Resilience), distill central question (ie how do we better support each other during times of hardship, then The Challenge (start asking questions), action research, what questions do we need to answer, guiding activities & resources, handing off the majority of the ownership to the students. Faculty guide & redirect. Solution needs to be something the student can try.
