There’s a new faculty-initiated group at Tufts called STREAM (Sharing Technology for Research, Education, and new Media) & my colleagues & I will join their meeting this afternoon.

Rather than print out resources (this is supposed to be NEW media, after all, right?) I thought I’d just post them here, so here they are – just a small collection of items that I think will contribute to the discussion & the group.

A few annotation-specific resources
Open Annotation Community Group
Group working “towards a common, RDF-based, specification for annotating digital resources.” http://www.w3.org/community/openannotation

Another MOOC

Just signed up to “participate” in my third MOOC, thanks to inspiration from my colleagues. I wonder if I’ll do more than watch this one go by & appreciate access to resources (since that’s mostly all I did with the last two). Interesting experiment in what it takes to engage me. At least I have the links all in this blog, so if I remember to look here, I’ll be able to find them later.

5 Minutes of Fame:

Had an interesting morning volunteering at the registration desk & a lovely lunch, plus a visit to the 16th floor for posters, inter actives, art exhibits & an amazing view of the Charles river.

In my first session now, Mediathread from the folks at Columbia’s Center for New Media Teaching and Learning. Pretty cool tool. Libraries of content (databases, public sites, etc) plus tools for annotating/analyzing them & user-generated content. Fun to explore it in the session.

The Mediathread team is looking for others with interest & has tried to help others get it installed & integrated with authentication systems.

Apple session on challenge based learning. Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow (ACOT), v2.

6 design principles:
1. 21st century skills
2. Relevant & applied curriculum
3. Informative Assessments
4. Culture of Creativity & Inmovation
5. Social & Emotional connection
6. 24/7 Access

Inspiring movie, “Blindsight”.

Framework components: starts with a big idea (eg Resilience), distill central question (ie how do we better support each other during times of hardship, then The Challenge (start asking questions), action research, what questions do we need to answer, guiding activities & resources, handing off the majority of the ownership to the students. Faculty guide & redirect. Solution needs to be something the student can try.

I’ve just joined another MOOC (this is my second to date, the first was Change11), and I’m excited about it. It’s “First Steps into Learning & Teaching in Higher Education“, and I’m hoping that it will both support my work to help faculty improve their teaching & will also help me with design, delivery, and evaluation of my own teaching practice.

I’m happy to have completed the first Teaching with Technology Symposium at Tufts yesterday & the day before. Many colleagues & I worked hard to design, develop, and deliver this new event & although results from the official evaluations have not yet been compiled, I was very happy with the event & have received very positive feedback from many faculty who attended.
